Men's Volleyball Falls Against (14) Saint Xavier

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – Cornerstone took on Saint Xavier in a neutral site game on the campus of Aquinas College, falling 3-1 to the 14th ranked team in the nation. The Golden Eagles kept it close in the first two sets, but could not overcome the offense of Shane Ooms (20 kills) and defense of Jake McClain (seven blocks). Cornerstone now moves to 7-13 overall, and remains 1-9 in the WHAC.

Game Recap – Saint Xavier (Ill.) – 3 Cornerstone – 1 (26-24, 28-30, 25-15, 25-17) 
  • Saint Xavier got off to a commanding start, taking a 5-1 lead early in the contest.
  • Not to be denied, David Galanes had a strong kill and Max Hernandez had an ace to help get Cornerstone close, down 8-7, early in the first set.
  • The Cougars went on a 6-2 run just a few points later to take a 16-10 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles responded by taking seven of the next eight points, led by two David Galanes kills, to even up the set at 17-17.
  • Max Hernandez, Brunno Peres, and Patrick Voloch all had to key kills to get Cornerstone within one point of winning the set at 24-23.
  • But Saint Xavier would storm back, winning the final three points of the first set to win 26-24.
  • Cornerstone started off the second set well, going up 5-2, before the Cougars won four straight points to take an early second set lead 6-5.
  • Later in the set, David Galanes would serve up back-to-back service aces in the midst of a five-point CU run to put the Golden Eagles up 14-12.
  • A few points later, the Cougars would respond with a 6-1 run to reclaim the lead 20-17.
  • After a 3-0 CU run, there was back-and-forth, intense action between the teams. The Golden Eagles would end strong and take the second set 30-28 on a Patrick Voloch service ace.
  • The third set would not be as kind to Cornerstone as the Saint Xavier would use multiple two-point runs and an 8-0 run to hurt CU. The Golden Eagles would be unable to recover in the third set, dropping it 25-15.
  • Cornerstone started the fourth start well, keeping close with the Cougars after a David Galanes kills to pull within one point, 10-9, of SXU.
  • A 6-1 run by Saint Xavier and the offensive presence of Shane Ooms would doom CU as the Cougars took the fourth set 25-17, winning the match 3-1.

What's Next? 
Cornerstone will take a week off before they travel south for a series of spring break matches. They will start off that road trip at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee on Saturday, March 5 at 9 a.m. They will follow-up that match at 11 a.m. when they take on Maryville College.
