Men's Volleyball Drops Two Matches to Start Spring Break Road Trip

LEBANON, Tenn.  – Cornerstone played in two tough matches today at Dallas Floyd Arena. The Golden Eagles took on Cumberland for the second time this season and fell 3-2 to open up play on this spring break road trip. In the second match, CU had a tougher time against Maryville, falling 3-1. Joshua Beaumont led the Cornerstone defense with 10 blocks against Cumberland. Then David Galanes had a strong day on offense, led by his 12 kills against Maryville. After today's two losses, CU fell to 7-15.

Game One Recap – Cumberland (Tenn.) – 3 | Cornerstone – 2 (25-20, 18-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-12) 
  • The Golden Eagles and Phoenix traded early runs, with CU going on a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead.
  • They continued to trade points until Cumberland went on a 7-0 run, aided by a few Cornerstone errors, to take a 16-9 lead. 
  • Cornerstone tried to get back in the match after kills from David Galanes and Brunno Peres, but could not quite rebound from the deficit, as Cumberland took the first set 25-20.
  • Brunno Perez started off the set with a big kill that helped turn momentum into Cornerstone's favor.
  • The Golden Eagles then went on a 10-1 streak, led by four David Galanes kills, to take a commanding 18-7 lead.
  • Cumberland and Cornerstone then traded small runs before Cornerstone was able to finish off the second set 25-18 on a Phoenix attacking error.
  • The Phoenix got off to a hot start in the third set, going up 6-2 early, then 12-5 a few points later
  • Cornerstone would not be denied, going on a 6-1 run, aided by three Jacob Brinks kills to cut the Cumberland lead to one.
  • Then, the Golden Eagles went on a 7-1 run to take a 19-16 lead pushed ahead by some big Joshua Beaumont blocks.
  • Cumberland would make things close, coming back to eventually take a 25-24 lead.
  • Cornerstone finished off the third set well, winning the final three points, capped by a Jacob Brinks service ace, 27-25.
  • The Golden Eagles benefitted from three straight Phoenix errors to take an early 4-2 lead in the fourth set.
  • For the majority of the fourth set, the Golden Eagles and Phoenix traded points, highlighted by Max Hernandex and Patrick Voloch kills.
  • However, with Cornerstone up 19-18, Cumberland went on a dominant 7-0 run to finish out the fourth set 25-19 to tie the match at two sets apiece.
  • Cornerstone looked strong in the fifth set, going by two points multiple times, eventually taking an 11-9 lead on a David Galanes kill.
  • At that point, Cumberland took over winning six of the last seven points to win the final set 15-12.
Game Two Recap – Maryville (Mo.) – 3 | Cornerstone – 1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19) 
  • Cornerstone and Maryville traded 3-0 runs early in the match. Brunno Peres and Hubert Sliwinski were strong, each getting early kills.
  • Down 7-5, CU went on a 4-0 run, capped by a David Galanes kill, to take a 9-7 lead.
  • Maryville and Cornerstone traded points during the middle of the first set until Brunno Peres back-to-back CU kills helped the Golden Eagles tie the match at 17-17 before finishing the set strong.
  • Then, down 22-21, CU won four of the last five points to win the opening set 25-23, led by another Brunno Peres kill.
  • Once again, CU and MU traded points to begin the set. Max Hernandez and David Galanes did their best to keep the Golden Eagles in check with multiple kills each.
  • However, Maryville went on a 9-1 run to take a 23-15 lead before eventually taking the second set 25-18.
  • Cornerstone again started off the third set matching the pace of Maryville, helped by four straight Maryville errors to take an 8-7 lead.
  • MU continued to go on small runs midway through the third set as they continued to get around the CU defense.
  • Eventually, Maryville was able to finish off the third set with solid attacking, winning 25-19.
  • Maryville started off the fourth set hot, going up 11-4, which was capped by a service ace.
  • Hubert Sliwinski did his part to keep CU in the match, registering a kill during a small run to help Cornerstone cut the MU lead to 14-11.
  • Late in the fourth set, each team traded 4-0 runs, helping the Golden Eagles keep things close at 22-18.
  • However, Maryville was able to finish out the match on a CU attacking error, winning the fourth set 25-19.
By the Numbers 
12 – Joshua Beaumont had a block party in Tennessee, registering 12 kills in two matches, with ten blocks coming in the first match.
22/22 – David Galanes and Max Hernandez had 22 kills apiece today. 
36 – Patrick Voloch had 36 assists in each set for a total of 72 on the day.
