Bats awaken as Baseball splits with Point Park

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Golden Eagles put up 16 runs against Point Park suffering a devastating 10-7 walk-off loss in game one, and responding with a 9-8 victory in game two, giving up six in the final inning, as the rain began to fall. CU recorded 21 total hits in the game and are now 1-3 on the year, earning their first victory in the short season. Cornerstone will face their toughest test of the trip at (3) Southeastern tomorrow in a 3 p.m. double-header down in Lakeland.

Game One – Point Park – 10 Cornerstone – 7
  • 25th ranked Point Park got on the board right away in game one as Jared Campbell came around to score on an Ed Fluger RBI double down the left field line.
  • The very next batter Carlos Sanchez hit a second pitch two run home run that barely stayed fair down the left field line to quickly bring the score to 3-0.
  • Starter Adam Hotovy was able to get out of the first with a strikeout and fly out, keeping the score 3-0 after one.
  • Cornerstone immediately responded in the top of the second with an RBI triple from Isaac Tayes to score Jake Collins for the first run of the season.
  • Lucas Vega went the opposite way later in the second inning, scoring Isaac Tayes and bringing the deficit to just one. The game then was tied after a Point Park error from the third baseman with two outs that allowed Cornerstone to tie the game at three with JC Salinas scoring.
  • In the top of the third, Isaac Tayes stayed hot at the plate with an RBI double this time to score Austin Hurt and give CU their first lead, 4-3.
  • After a scoreless second inning for Adam Hotovy, Point Park would load the bases with no outs. The Pioneers tied the game on a sacrifice fly, but Hotovy used his off-speed stuff well to get out of the jam and keep the game tied at four.
  • Some great defensive plays from Jake Collins and Austin Hurt, stranded a Point Park runner at third and kept the score 4-4 after four.
  • Hurt brought his great plays to the offensive end with a lead-off double in the fifth. A dink single from George Cutler and an error from the Pioneers catcher allowed Hurt to score and make it 5-4.
  • A new Pioneer pitcher entered in the fifth and Jake Collins greeted him with his first HR as a Golden Eagle with a two-run shot that gave CU some breathing room at 7-4.
  • Caden Ritsema and Jared Riley came in and pitched the next 2.2 innings, each allowing a run each on a solo jack and a sacrifice fly. Riley struggled with command in the final inning and was forced to exit with the bases loaded up one and two outs.
  • Ben Cunningham came in looking to record the final out, but Jordon Campbell hit his second homer of the day a walk off grand slam to win 10-7.

Game Two – Cornerstone – 9 Point Park – 8
  • The bats got going early in game two as Trenton Gilman singled to lead-off and scored the very next batter on a Jordan Wenzel double in the bottom of the first. Four more runs would score in the inning with back-to-back RBI doubles from Jake Collins and Isaac Tayes and a two-run bomb from George Cutler
  • Starter Dylan VandenBerg cruised through the first three innings, and Point Park reliever John Hawley did the same for second and third, as the score remained 5-0 in favor of Cornerstone after three innings.
  • Trenton Gilman stayed hot with a single in the bottom of the fourth and later stole a base, but was thrown out on his way to third after a wild pitch bounced favorably back to the catcher. The inning ended with CU still leading 5-0.
  • Point Park was finally able to find the scoreboard in the fifth on a solo home run from the Pioneers catcher, Luis Mujica. Dylan VandenBerg continued his strong outing however, striking out the final batter looking to keep the damage to one run.
  • Cornerstone immediately got the run back as Austin Hurt and Jake Collins each doubled to lead-off the bottom of the fifth, bringing the score to 6-1.
  • Later in the fifth, Landon Poll hit a single down the opposite line to score Jake Collins and improve the advantage to 7-1. George Cutler then joined the fifth inning double club to center field, scoring Isaac Tayes and making it 8-1.
  • Point Park got one more run in the top of the sixth after a pair of doubles to bring their deficit back to six.
  • In Cornerstone's final at bat, Jordan Wenzel stole third and then made it home on an error from the catcher to make it 9-2.
  • Devin Pulling entered for the seventh as the rain began to fall. He gave up two runs as the rain picked up one out. CU was forced to make another pitching change as Brody Nelson entered.
  • Point Park continued to battle hitting another Grand Slam that brought the score to 9-8.
  • Nelson was able to record the final out, as Cornerstone snuck out of game two with the 9-8 win.
