Helderop Drops 21 Points as Women's Basketball Falls at Rochester

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Cornerstone stayed close with Rochester throughout the game, eventually dropping the contest 83-71. CU has played Rochester tough this season, but failed to beat the Warriors during the regular season. Kennedy Helderop led the Golden Eagles this afternoon, dropping 21 points while going 4-7 from beyond the arc. Cornerstone had a hard time containing the Rochester offense, as two Warriors scored over 20 points in the game. With this loss, CU moves to 3-19 overall, 1-13 in the WHAC.
 
Game Flow:
  • CU started off with back-to-back three pointers to start the game with Kennedy Helderop hitting the first and Olivia Kubik drilling the second to take an early 6-0 lead.
  • Ellen Kresge completed an and one after hitting a free throw after being fouled on a layup. This led to Cornerstone holding a 9-2 lead with 6:38 to play in the first quarter.
  • Rochester stormed back to end the first quarter, accumulating 18 points before Olivia Kubik beat the buzzer for CU as the Warriors took an 18-15 lead into the first break.
  • RU scored the first four points of the second quarter before Kaycee Sluiter gathered an offensive board before making a put back layup to cut the Rochester lead to 22-17.
  • Down six with 2:01 to play in the second quarter, Oliva Kubik nailed a three to cut the Warrior lead to three.
  • Following a Maddison Fulks three, Rochester hit a layup to send Cornerstone to the break down 36-30.
  • Down ten, Cornerstone made a comeback behind a pair of Stephanie Ainsworth layups and a Kennedy Helderop fast break layup to cut the RU lead to 43-39.
  • Rochester pulled away as the third quarter came to a close taking a 56-46 lead into the final break.
  • The Warriors went on a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter, taking a 20-point lead following an Imari Martin fast break layup with 7:55 to play.
  • Kennedy Helderop did her best to keep the Golden Eagles alive after splashing a three with 5:18 to play to cut the Rochester lead to 19.
  • Kennedy Helderop continued her scoring attack for CU, going on a ten-point tear at the end of the fourth quarter, bringing the Golden Eagles within ten points with 58 seconds remaining.
  • Rochester would stave off the Cornerstone comeback attempt to win this WHAC contest 83-71.
 
By the numbers:
