GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles were stifled by the Racer defense on a COVID rescheduled Monday night game in Lima, Ohio as Cornerstone fell 60-55. CU shot a season low from the field and the three-point line in the loss as they drop to 16-9, 10-5 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone continues a busy end to the regular season on Wednesday as they begin a five-game home-stand vs. UM-Dearborn at 7:30 p.m.
What you need to know?
- Carter Nyp and Christian Rodriguez hit a three each to start the game for CU, giving them a 6-4 advantage.
- Both defenses started to succeed early in the first half after that, as Cornerstone was held scoreless for nearly seven minutes and fell behind 10-6.
- Jack Joldersma tried to bring the offensive energy with a dunk with 9:12 remaining in the first half as CU trailed 12-10.
- Northwestern Ohio's Biggz Johnson hit a three with 3:10 to play in the first half that put the Racers on top 20-16.
- Biggz Johnson continued to power the Racer offense to put them on top by as much as six in the final minutes, but Carter Nyp hit a layup to end the half to make the halftime Golden Eagle deficit four, 25-21.
- UNOH blitzed Cornerstone with a 5-0 run to start the second half to garnish their largest lead of the game at nine.
- Cedric Delancy later hit a three for the Racers that put them on top 33-23.
- Jonny Strube hit a pair of threes in the middle of the second half that cut the UNOH lead back down to six at 37-31 with 12:55 to play.
- UNOH continued to hit the three-ball however, responding with an 8-0 run to go on top by 14, 45-31.
- After nearly two minutes of no scoring, Trent Summerfield hit an and-one for CU's first points since the 12:55 mark. This sparked a 7-0 run where CU got to the line and a Christian Rodriguez layup put the Golden Eagles within five with just over five to play.
- In the final five minutes, UNOH did just enough to not let Cornerstone complete the comeback. Christian Rodriguez hit a layup that made it a one possession game at 55-58 with six seconds to go, but it was too-little-too-late as the Golden Eagles fell 60-55.
By the Numbers
29.2% - Cornerstone was held to a season low 29.2% from the field tonight.
13.3% - CU was also held to a season low 13.3% from the three-point line in Racer Gymnasium.
