Last Week Recap
The Golden Eagles continued WHAC play last week with two NAIA Top 15/RV opponents in (RV) Aquinas and (9) Indiana Tech. CU took the rival AQ to five sets but fell 15-11 in the fifth, while they lost in straight sets to the undefeated Warriors. Cornerstone is 4-8, 0-5 WHAC as they will play their sixth and seventh conference games of the year, completing the first half of WHAC play.
A Little Bit of Everything
Sophomore
Max Hernandez did a little bit of everything for the Golden Eagles last week as he led the team with 13 kills and 22 assists vs. AQ and then followed that up with a team high 16 assists and six digs vs. Indiana Tech. Hernandez on the year has a team third best 63 kills, second best 140 assists, third best 20 blocks, and sixth best 35 digs.
Third in the Nation
The Golden Eagles currently rank third in the NAIA in total digs with 407, but unlike most teams that are at the top of the NAIA in digs, CU is getting passing from a multitude of players as six different Cornerstone players have 35+ digs. Libero
Alex Hekman leads the way with 95 digs, while setter
Patrick Voloch has 82 digs of his own. Judson, who CU saw earlier this year leads the NAIA in total digs with 471 this season.
Scouting Lawrence Tech
The Blue Devils have played 10 matches this year and gone 6-4, as they are the only other team in the WHAC without a conference win, sitting at 0-3 in WHAC play. In conference games, LTU was swept by Aquinas and Siena Heights and lost in four to Mount Vernon Nazarene. Lawrence Tech is a very young team with 12 freshmen after the team did not see action in the 2021 year due to COVID-19. The freshmen outside hitter combo of Jeffry Fuhrmann and Felix Perez lead the Blue Devils offensively this season as well combining for 202 kills between the two of them. Fuhrmann is also hitting .343 on the year to rank 11
th in the NAIA. The block has also been strong for LTU thi season with 23 solo blocks to rank sixth in the NAIA and a total of 65 to rank 11
th.
Scouting Lourdes
Cornerstone will take on (5) Lourdes for the second time already this year as they lost in straight sets down in Ohio on January 28. The Gray Wolves have played just five matches so far and gone 4-1 with a rather surprising straight set loss to Siena Heights on February 1 in their home gym. Defending WHAC Player of the Year Jeff Lam has still been a standout however, averaging 4.59 kills per set and hitting .318 in the early season. The service line and passing have also been strengths for Lourdes as they have 47 aces this season for an insane average of 2.76 per set to go along with 10.82 digs per set. Sophomore Eduardo Ayala leads the team with 13 aces and is second in digs per set at 2.65.
