Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Contest vs. UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a back-and-forth contest, UM-Dearborn was able to hold off the Cornerstone late in the contest to seal a 65-57 victory. Maricela Macias dropped 19 points to lead UM-D, while Olivia Kubik paced the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Each team held four-plus point leads throughout the contest with each team being able to come back until the Wolverines held the final lead to win. This loss drops the Golden Eagles to 4-20 overall, 2-14 in the WHAC.
 
Game Flow:
  • Olivia Kubik got the CU scoring started with a deep three to give the Golden Eagles an early 3-2 lead.
  • Down one, Stephanie Ainsworth had a big bucket in the paint to give CU a one-point lead of their own with 3:59 to play in the first quarter.
  • Maddison Fulks hit a big three, and then Stephanie Ainsworth hit a pair of free throws to end the first quarter scoring giving CU a 15-11 lead heading into the first break.
  • Olivia Kubik scored three straight points to begin the second quarter, making a layup and a free throw.
  • With 3:24 to play in the first half, Parrish Hudson hit a layup to give Cornerstone six-point lead 28-22.
  • UM-Dearborn stormed back, going on a 9-3 run to end the second quarter, capped by a Ro'Zhane Wells and-one to tie the game up at 31-31 heading into halftime.
  • Cornerstone started slow in the third quarter but got back on track after Skylar Scholten hit a layup to cut the UM-Dearborn lead to three points with 5:59 to play in the quarter.
  • Down 40-35, CU scored nine straight points, capped by a Maddison Fulks three, to take a 46-40 lead with 21 seconds to play in the third.
  • UM-Dearborn would hit a layup at the end of the quarter, but Cornerstone held a 46-42 lead entering the final break.
  • The Golden Eagles went up five points after a Kaycee Sluiter jumper with 6:46 to play and with momentum on their side.
  • The Wolverines struck back methodically, going on a 9-0 run to take a 56-52 lead with 2:45 to play.
  • UM-Dearborn would never look back, taking the win 65-57.
 
By the numbers:
11 – Olivia Kubik was the only Golden Eagle to reach double-digit scoring with 11 points.
34/28 – Both teams were strong in the paint, with UM-D outscoring CU 34-28.
9 – Stephanie Ainsworth was strong on the boards recording nine rebounds in the game.
