Nagelhout's Walk-off Double Highlights Split for Women's Softball

Kissimmee, Fla. – Excitement in Florida as Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a walk-off double to give Cornerstone a 4-3 win over Saint Francis (Ind.). The Golden Eagle faithful erupted when she sent the ball over the second baseman's head and the team ran onto the field to surround Nagelhout in a fantastic scene to kick off the day. Cornerstone played behind for the second half against Saint Francis, with the bats coming alive in the bottom of the seventh for a clutch win. In game two of the day, the Golden Eagles struggled to get much going offensively, relying on the pitching of Alyssa Braam and Kaitlin Johnson to keep it close in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Cardinal Stritch. After the 1-1 day, Cornerstone moves to 4-3 this season.

Game One: Cornerstone – 4 | Saint Francis (Ind.) – 3
  • Mikayla Meade got off to a stellar start, forcing ground balls on her first two pitches for two quick outs. She finished the 1-2-3 inning a few pitches later forcing a flyout.
  • Cornerstone struggled at the plate for the first three innings, failing to out a runner on base during that stretch.
  • In the top of the third, Cardinal Stritch got on the board after a CU error allowed the game's opening run to cross the plate.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Eagles finally broke through, evening the game at 1-1 after McKenzie Butgereit's bunt single gave Jolie Groeneveld just enough time to get home safely.
  • Then, an inning later, Cornerstone took the lead when a hard-hit ball to second by Jolie Groeneveld drove Delaney Wilson home for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Saint Francis responded in the top of the sixth with some strong base running and timely singles to regain the lead at 3-2.
  • With that lead and two on base, Kaitlin Johnson entered the game and forced an out to stop the damage.
  • Heading into the bottom of the seventh and the Golden Eagles down by one, Delaney Wilson got things started with a single to right field, then had Allisen Martz take her place as a pinch runner
  • On the next play, Bailey Anson hit an infield single and Martz tried to take third but tagged out when the right fielder came in when the third baseman was absent.
  • The next batter flew out to right field, giving the Golden Eagles one more out to complete the comeback.
  • Moriah Sprague walked during the next at bat, which put Anson on second.
  • Then, Jolie Groeneveld hit a grounder to the SFU shortstop who mishandled the ball, allowing all three Golden Eagles to advance.
  • Mackenzie Nagelhout showed off her clutch gene, driving in two runs with a walk-off double, giving Cornerstone a 4-3 win.
  • "I learned a lot from my first two at-bats, then saw a pitch I liked and drove it over the second baseman's head," said Nagelhout. "Then to celebrate with my teammates after the win brought me so much joy."

Game Two: Cardinal Stritch – 2 | Cornerstone – 0
  • Both teams had quiet bats early in this contest, combining for two hits through two and a half innings, including a double by Mackenzie Nagelhout.
  • Cardinal Stritch made some things happen in the bottom of the third when they reached on an error, stole a base, and scored on a single to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Cornerstone would go down 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth before Cardinal Stritch was able to add an insurance run on a single that scored a runner on second in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The Golden Eagles would only get one more hit in the contest, courtesy of Jocelyn Hernandez, before falling 2-0 in a tight game.

By the Numbers:
2– Doubles by Mackenzie Nagelhout on the day, including the walk-off double in game one.
4 – Strikeouts by Alyssa Braam in the game against Cardinal Stritch.
7 – Hits by the Golden Eagles in their win over Saint Francis (Ind.).
