Softball Drops a Pair in Friday Evening Action

Kissimmee, Fla. – In today's action from the NTC Spring Games, Cornerstone went 0-2, falling against #8 Indiana Wesleyan 9-0 in game one, then dropping a tough contest against Bellevue 2-0 in game two. The Golden Eagles struggled at the plate but still had opportunities in game two, leaving multiple runners on. These losses drop CU to 4-5 on the season. 

 
Game One: #8 Indiana Wesleyan – 9 | Cornerstone – 0
  • Not many highlights for the Golden Eagles in this game as they totaled two hits in this game.
  • Indiana Wesleyan got the scoring going with a solo home run in the top of the second in to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, Delaney Wilson recorded one of the two hits for CU when she was called safe on a bunt.
  • IWU continued their scoring in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits and aided by a Golden Eagle error.
  • The top of sixth saw IWU continue to score, as they added three more runs to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Indiana Wesleyan scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend their lead to 9-0.
  • Sydney Carr walked to start the bottom of the seventh, then Moriah Sprague tried to get the offense going when she hit a single into right, putting runners on first and third, but that was close as CU would get to scoring in the 9-0 defeat.
 
Game Two: Bellevue – 2 | Cornerstone – 0
  • Cornerstone had an early opportunity to score with runners on second and third, before Jolie Groeneveld was tagged out at the plate in a run down after McKenzie Butgereit put the ball in play. The Golden Eagles would not be able to score in the top of the first.
  • In the bottom of the second, Bellevue struck first on a solo shot to dead center, taking a 1-0 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles were able to get a couple hits over the next few innings, but were unable to get a run across the plate during that stretch.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Bellevue added to their lead after a bases loaded walk brought the insurance run home for a 2-0 Bellevue lead.
  • Cornerstone would threaten in the top of the seventh after Allisen Martz got on base with a walk.
  • Then, a Jolie Groeneveld hit put runners on first and second. After another batter, CU had runners on the corners but could not drive them home, as the Golden Eagles fell 2-0 in the nightcap.

By the Numbers:
7 – Bases taken by Jolie Groeneveld in game two, aided by a double and a triple.
6 – Strikeouts by Kaitlin Johnson in the loss against Bellevue. 
8 – Combined hits by the Golden Eagles in today's contests.
