AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Golden Eagles returned to play after a rain out yesterday against two more Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) teams, as they fell 11-2 to the quick paced Northwestern Raiders and responded with a 6-5 walk-off win over the Hastings Broncos.
Trenton Gilman hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in game two to get the victory and score
Jordan Wenzel as the team moves to 8-10 on the year. CU closes out their 16-day trip to Florida with a pair of nine-inning contests tomorrow against Hannibal-Lagrange and these same Hastings Mustangs starting at 12:45 p.m.
Game One – Northwestern – 11 Cornerstone - 2
- Freshman Brody Nelson cruised through the first two innings against Northwestern, working quickly to record the first six outs in just 19 pitches and keep the game tied at 0-0.
- Cornerstone got two runners on in both the second and third innings, but Northwestern was able to get out of it as the score remained 0-0.
- In the third, Brody Nelson walked the first two. With two outs, Northwestern got their first hit of the game scoring a run to take a 1-0 edge.
- Later in the inning, NC hit a two RBI double down the right field line to make it 3-0. Nelson's day ended and Ben Cunningham came in to pitch. The Raiders added two more in the inning on five hits to increase their lead to five.
- Cornerstone got two back in the top of the fourth, as the designated-hitter Landon Poll hit a two-run moon shot of a home run to left field to bring CU within three, 5-2.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Alex Hayward entered to pitch. After walking one and getting two outs a deep double to left center and a single to dead center scored two runs and brought the Raider lead back to five at 7-2.
- An error on a failed pick off allowed one more Northwestern run to score with two outs in the fifth making it 8-2.
- In the sixth, Kip Culinan capped off the scoring for Northwestern with a three-run HR to right field to give the Raiders their largest lead, 11-2.
- Cornerstone had no answer at the plate in the seventh, falling 11-2 in game one to drop to 7-10 on the year.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 6 Hastings – 5
- The Broncos got on the scoreboard quickly in game two as the catcher Kissler singled up the middle with two outs to score two runs off starter Dylan VandenBerg. VandenBerg did well to limit the damage getting out of the inning just down two.
- In the bottom of the first inning, Austin Hurt stayed hot with a jam shot RBI single to score Trenton Gilman and cut the deficit to one. CU left the bases loaded as Hastings got out of the damage with a strikeout.
- Trenton Gilman made an outstanding catch in left field to end the top of the second inning, diving down the line to strand runners on first and third and keep the score 2-1.
- JC Salinas did the job that tied the game in the bottom of the third, hitting a triple to right center field to score Landon Poll tying things at two.
- Dylan VandenBerg got the first 1-2-3 inning of game two in the top of the fourth, striking out a batter and getting two groundouts.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Austin Hurt brought his single season program record for HR's to a total of 10 with a bomb to straight away center to give Cornerstone the 4-2 lead.
- The very next batter Jake Collins hit a home run as well crushing one well over the left field fence to make it 5-2.
- Hastings responded with a run in the top of the fifth with an RBI single up the middle that cut the Golden Eagle lead to 5-3.
- The Broncos nine-hole hitter was able to tie the game with a long battle at the plate and a fielder's choice play that also saw an error off reliever Josiah Stairs. Stairs struck out the next batter to keep the game tied at five.
- Trenton Gilman was the hero in game two, hitting a sacrifice fly to left that scored pinch hitter Jordan Wenzel to take game two, 6-5.

13/16 – 13 of the opponents 16 runs on the day were scored with two outs in the inning.

Landon Poll hit his second career HR and his first of the year against Northwestern.

Austin Hurt is the first player in CU program history to hit double-digits in the home run column, recording his 10
th of the year today. He broke the single season record with nine last time out on Wednesday.

CU's time in Russ Matt comes to an end tomorrow with a pair of nine-inning contests against Hannibal-Lagrange and Hastings. Action is scheduled to start at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.
