Men’s Volleyball falls to receiving votes and rival Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite the Golden Eagles' best effort, they were unable to take down rivals Aquinas in a tough 3-0 loss. Though Cornerstone fought hard, the Saints were able to cruise towards a 3-0 win in this cross-city matchup. CU falls to 10-17, 1-10 WHAC on the year. Coming up later in the week, Cornerstone will travel to Illinois to take on Trinity College at 7 p.m. and to Indiana where they will take on (7) Indiana Tech also at 7 p.m.

Aquinas – 3 Cornerstone – 0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-23)
  • The Golden Eagles were able to start the first set well, going up 2-0 with a kill from David Galanes and a service ace by Patrick Voloch.
  • Despite Cornerstone's best efforts, Aquinas went up 10-5 on a couple service aces by Daniel De La Rosa and multiple attack errors from Jacob Brinks, Max Hernandez, and David Galanes
  • A first set victory seemed out of reach, as Cornerstone went down 20-10 to the Saints
  • Thanks to some powerful attack from Jacob Brinks and some defensive errors, the Golden Eagles were able to come within reach of Aquinas, with a big come back putting the score at 24-20 Aquinas, before losing the first set 25-20.
  • The second set begun with both teams exchanging points back and forth, early in the second set the game was tied 5-5.
  • Some attack errors helped the Golden Eagles stay in the match by bring them closer to the Saints, the Saints were leading 12-10.
  • A run of errors from Max Hernandez, Jacob Brinks, and David Galanes, put Aquinas up 19-11 late in the second set.
  • Exchanging points late in the set was not enough for Cornerstone to make a come-back, the Saints won the second set 25-15.
  • Aquinas begun the third set strong, going up 7-3 on kills from Julian Armendano and Phillip Tubman.
  • The Golden Eagles still had some fight in them however, as they fought hard with kills from Max Hernandez, Hubert Sliwinski, and even Patrick Voloch, closing the deficit and taking the lead 14-13.
  • For Aquinas, Julian Armendano kept the kills coming, helping the Saints retake the lead, putting them up 17-15 in the third set.
  • Max Hernandez had three services aces left in the tank, putting the Golden Eagles back in the lead 22-21
  • The errors hit Cornerstone hard, as a run of three errors and one kill brought the Golden Eagles to the ground, Aquinas winning the third and final set 25-23.
 
By the Numbers
14/4 – The Aquinas service ace dominated the contest as they recorded 14 to the Golden Eagles four. 
8 – David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont had a team high eight kills in the match. 
.200 – Both teams hit above .200 in the match, limiting the attack errors.
