Men's Volleyball falls in three set match at Trinity Christian

PALOS HEIGHTS, ILL.– It was a back-and-forth match in the third set as the Cornerstone fell in their away match against Trinity Christian 3-0. Cornerstone looked strong in the third set, coming very close to keeping the game alive. Cornerstone's attack percentage took a large jump from the second set to the third, a difference of 0.227 hitting percentage. However, the Trolls were able to match and go above that hitting percentage as they took all three sets in this tough road game for the Golden Eagles. This loss drops CU to 10-18 overall, 1-10 in the WHAC. The team will return home on Wednesday for WHAC play against Lawrence Tech at 7 p.m. 

Trinity Christian – 3 Cornerstone - 0 (25-22, 25-21, 29-27)
  • Trinity Christian was able to establish an early lead in the first set, going up 5-1 on a handful of kills from Alex Costa.
  • A service ace from Kairu Tuma'e helped the Golden Eagles close the gap a bit, making the score 5-3 Trinity.
  • A run of errors from the Trinity Trolls cost them some ground, as Cornerstone was able to lower the deficit in the first set, the score 10-10.
  • Patrick Voloch was handing out assists like they were free samples. David Galanes, Max Hernandez, and Jacob Brinks took advantage of the sets from Patrick, to stay in the game at 13-13.
  • Some attack errors gave the Golden Eagles a scare, as the Trinity Trolls were able to go up 17-13.
  • On a kill from Hubert Sliwinski and an attack error by Trinity's Mike Hay, Cornerstone came within reach of the Trolls once again, down 18-16 in the first set.
  • After a timeout by Trinity, the Trolls were able to create a larger lead, the Trolls led in the first set 20-16.
  • A two surprise kills from Patrick Voloch and a service ace from Hubert Sliwinski, brought the Golden Eagles closer to the Trolls as the first set neared its end. Trinity led 21-20.
  • A kill from the Trolls and a service ace helped them to close out the first set 25-22 Trolls.
  • The Golden Eagles were off to an exciting start in the second set with a two-man block from Joshua Beaumont and David Galanes. The set was tied 2-2.
  • Trinity and Cornerstone exchanged one service ace apiece, and one attack error apiece to keep the game tied 5-5.
  • The Trolls were able to take the lead in the second set on a run of kills from Mike Hay and Ryan Schmidt, putting Trinity up 9-5.
  • Patrick Voloch sought to stop the momentum of Trinity with a kill of his own, Trinity led 9-6.
  • Two attack errors from Cornerstone increased Trinity's lead to 12-6 in the second set.
  • On serves from David Galanes, Trinity was unable to gain a larger lead, making multiple attack errors that closed the gap. The Trolls were still leading 15-13.
  • On a desperate attempt to stay in this match, Patrick Voloch assisted Joshua Beaumont to keep the Golden Eagles in the game. The Trolls still led the second set 23-21.
  • Two errors from Cornerstone brought the second set to a close. The Trinity Trolls winning 25-21.
  • Patrick Voloch got the third set off to a fine start with a service ace. The Golden Eagles led 1-0.
  • A kill from Hubert Sliwinski and two errors from Trinity helped Cornerstone keep their lead in the third set 6-4.
  • Two big kills by David Galanes helped the Golden Eagles maintain the lead, the score was 9-6.
  • More kills from Hubert Sliwinski, Jacob Brinks, and David Galanes shocked the Trolls, as Cornerstone led the set 13-11.
  • An exchange of points midway through the third set kept the two teams close. Cornerstone were in the lead 14-12.
  • A kill from Jacob Brinks and an attack error by Trinity helped Cornerstone widen the gap, still leading the set 16-13.
  • More points were being exchanged evenly during this set. The score stayed tight as Cornerstone kept their lead 18-16.
  • The Trolls were able to take the lead for the first time in the third set thanks to a couple of kills and an attack error by Cornerstone. Trinity led 19-18.
  • Two attack errors from Cornerstone put the Trolls up 23-22, pushing the Golden Eagles in a timeout.
  • Of the timeout, Jacob Brinks came up with a big kill to tie the game 23-23.
  • A service error and another kill by David Galanes put the Golden Eagles back on top, 25-24.
  • Unfortunately, on a pair of errors from Cornerstone, and a pair of kills by Trinity, the Trinity Trolls won the third and final set 29-27.

The Golden Eagles are away once again on Saturday, March 18, as they face off against #7 Indiana Tech at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
