Softball Suffers a Loss and Tie in DH at (19) Olivet Nazarene

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – It was an eventful day in Illinois as Cornerstone lost one and tied one in Monday afternoon action. The bats were cooking for both teams in game one as (19) Olivet Nazarene took down CU 9-5. Each team capitalized on the long ball, with Cornerstone leading the way as Sydney Carr and Sydney Tilma each hit home runs in the late inning comeback attempt in the opening game. Game two was a different story as each team played more small ball en route to a 4-4 tie that was called due to darkness. The results from this twin bill moves the Golden Eagles to 5-7-1 on the season.
 
Game One: (19) Olivet Nazarene – 9 | Cornerstone – 5
  • ONU got started early when a sacrifice fly to right field drove in the first run of the game.
  • Moriah Sprague was able to get on base for CU in the top of the second, getting Sydney Carr home to tie up the game at 1-1.
  • The bottom of the second saw Olivet Nazarene heat up as they scored four runs on a couple hits and a passed ball to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
  • McKenzie Butgereit drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the third to cut the Olivet Nazarene lead to 5-2.
  • The Tigers would continue their offensive attack, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, then capitalizing on a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth to widen their lead to 8-2.
  • Sydney Carr would respond in the top of the sixth with a two-run shot of her own to cut the Tiger lead to 8-4, but Olivet Nazarene would answer that with a run of their own in the latter half of the inning.
  • Sydney Tilma ended the scoring in game one with a solo home run, but that was not able to stop the Tigers as Olivet Nazarene won 9-5.
 
Game Two: (19) Olivet Nazarene – 4 | Cornerstone – 4
  • The bats were quiet for both teams to start off the second game of the double header. Olivet Nazarene finally got on the board with three runs, capitalizing on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The sixth inning was were the Golden Eagles finally found their groove on offense as Jolie Groeneveld scored after hitting a triple on an error by the ONU second baseman. 
  • Then, Sydney Carr's single to right field drove freshman Mackenzie Nagelhout home to cut the Tiger lead to 3-2.
  • Delaney Wilson came to the plate next and delivered a shot to left field, bringing Abby Brower across the plate to tie the game at 3-3 after six.
  • In the top of the seventh, CU finally took the lead after Allisen Martz scored off an error by the ONU shortstop 4-3.
  • But the Tigers would not be denied and scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a deep foul ball to left field to tie the game up at 4-4.
  • Light would become an issue as neither team scored in the eighth before the umpires called the game due to darkness with a 4-4 tie.

3 – RBI for Sydney Carr during the double header in Bourbonnais.
22 – Hits given up by the Golden Eagles in the twin bill.
2 – Homeruns hit by CU on the day with Sydney Carr hitting one and Sydney Tilma hitting the other.
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles open up WHAC play with a double header at Lawrence Tech on Friday, March 25. First pitch of game one is slated for 2 p.m.
