Softball Sweeps Lawrence Tech in DH to Open WHAC Play

DETROIT – Cornerstone got off to a great start in WHAC play after knocking off Lawrence Tech twice. In the first game, CU won a nail biter as they staved off a fierce LTU comeback in the last two innings to win 5-4. Game two was won in a much more dominant fashion as the bats got hot for the Golden Eagles in a 15-3 victory. CU hit four home runs in game two as Bailey Anson, Delaney Wilson, Mackenzie Nagelhout, and Sydney Tilma all went yard. The Golden Eagles now get back to .500 overall at 7-7-1.
 
Game One: Cornerstone – 5 | Lawrence Tech – 4
  • Cornerstone started off quickly in the top of the first as a Sydney Carr sacrifice fly brought Mackenzei Nagelhout home for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to attack in the first inning as Delaney Wilson reached on an error, allowing McKenzie Butgereit to cross the plate to extend the CU lead to 2-0.
  • Neither team did much for the next couple of innings, but Delaney Wilson changed that with a solo home run in the top of the fourth to give CU a 3-0 lead.
  • The fifth inning saw more of the same from the Golden Eagles as Sydney Carr recorded another sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Jolie Groeneveld home for a 4-0 CU lead.
  • Delaney Wilson again proved dangerous at the plate as she knocked a triple down the right field line, driving another run home to five the Golden Eagles a commanding 5-0 lead after five innings.
  • Lawrence Tech would not go away quietly as they scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the CU lead to 5-1.
  • Then, in the bottom of the seventh, LTU hit a three-run home run with two outs to make things close at 5-4.
  • The Golden Eagles were able to hold onto the lead, getting the final out one batter later, to defeat LTU in game one 5-4.
 
Game Two: Cornerstone – 15 | Lawrence Tech – 3
  • Lawrence Tech got the scoring started in this game after a pair of singles brought two runs home for an early 2-0 Blue Devil lead in the bottom of the second.
  • The Golden Eagles responded quickly in the third when a Sydney Carr put the ball in play to bring Jolie Groeneveld across the plate to cut the LTU lead in half 2-1.
  • In the top of the fourth, Bailey Anson hit a long ball that drove in two, giving CU a 3-2 lead.
  • Then, Mackenzie Nagelhout added to the CU lead with a triple that brought Jolie Groeneveld home to grow the lead to 4-2.
  • The top of the fifth saw the Golden Eagles continue their scoring run when Moriah Sprague brought Sydney Carr home and Delaney Wilson scored on a wild pitch to go up 6-2.
  • Lawrence Tech would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but it would be all CU after that.
  • In the top of the sixth, Mackenzie Nagelhout drove Jolie Groeneveld home. Then, Delaney Wilson hit her second home run of the day, driving in three runs, to help give CU a 10-3 lead.
  • The top of the seventh would be when the Golden Eagles would finish their offensive outburst when Mackenzie Nagelhout tacked on a three-run home run, and Sydney Tilma hit a two-run shot out of the yard to give CU a 15-3 win.

6 – Hits by Mackenzie Nagelhout on the day, resulting in five RBI.
2 – Home runs hit by Delaney Wilson on the day, the first two official home runs of her career.

The Golden Eagles head two Howell for another twin bill as they face WHAC foe Cleary on Monday, March 28 at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
