GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone was hitting on all cylinders as they took down D-III Wittenberg 3-1 on Senior Day.
David Galanes and
Hubert Sliwinski each had double-digit kills to help send the seniors out with a win in Mol for the final time. Before the game, Cornerstone honored
Jacob Brinks,
Alex Hekman, and
Kairu Tuma'e as the three seniors who have been leaders within the volleyball program since it began last season. They also honored fellow senior and student assistant manager Cassidy Baker for her role in the team's success. This win moves CU to 11-20 overall on the season.
Game Recap – Cornerstone 3 | Wittenberg – 1 (25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22)
- Senior Jacob Brinks got things started the right way on Senior Day as he registered the first kill of the game to start a 3-0 run for the Golden Eagles.
- With Wittenberg attempting to make a small comeback, David Galanes ended those hopes with a monster kills to give CU a 12-8 lead early in the first set.
- Kills by David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski, along with some Wittenberg errors, gave Cornerstone momentum as they were able to capture the first set 25-19.
- CU got off to a hot start in the second set, going up 6-1 after a pair of Britt Parkinson aces.
- The Tigers of Wittenberg slowly clawed their way back into the match with small runs, eventually taking a 17-14 lead midway through the second set.
- David Galanes attempted to keep the Golden Eagles in it with a pair of late kills, but the Tigers carried the momentum to a second set win 25-22.
- The third set started off back-and-forth between the teams, but Joshua Beaumont and Max Hernandez had some clutch kills midway through the set to help CU go up 14-11.
- Then, Cornerstone went on a 3-0 run, capped by a Patrick Voloch kill, to take a more commanding 17-11 lead.
- The Golden Eagles would exchange points until the end of the set until a Wittenberg error gave CU the set 25-19.
- Hubert Sliwinski got hot at the beginning of the fourth set, recording three early kills to help the Golden Eagles go up 7-6.
- However, Wittenberg went on a 4-0 run to take a 10-7 lead, capitalizing on three kills and a CU error.
- The Golden Eagles would not back down, going on a 6-2 run to reclaim the lead 13-12 after a Tiger attacking error.
- Cornerstone and Wittenberg then exchanged multiple two-point runs until the match was tied up at 20-20.
- CU said enough, going on a 5-2 run and ending the match the same way they started: with senior Jacob Brinks registering a kill to end the set 25-22, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-1 victory on Senior Day.
