Kissimmee, Fla. – It was a bright and sunny day in Florida as Cornerstone kicked off the NTC Spring Games going 1-1. In the opener from the Fortune Road Athletic Complex, the Golden Eagles took down Florida National 3-1 behind a home run from
Maddy Chatman and strong pitching performances from
Mikayla Meade and
Alyssa Braam. Then, in game two, CU fell 6-4 against Spring Arbor after a late comeback fell just short. The Golden Eagles now move to 3-1 on the season.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 | Florida National - 1
- Florida National had hot bats early in the game but could not get a run in the first two innings despite four hits.
- Then, Cornerstone got on the board in a big way after Maddy Chatman hit a home run to left center, putting the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. "I had been looking for a big hit and it came at a great time to put our team up," said Chatman.
- The bats were relatively quiet for the next two innings until Florida National got on the board after a bunt brought in their first run of the game in the top of the sixth.
- The Golden Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the sixth after Jolie Groeneveld stole third base.
- With Groeneveld on third, Mackenzie Nagelhout singled to left center, driving in the run to give Cornerstone a 2-1 advantage.
- A few batters later, Jocelyn Hernandez singled to right center, driving in Nagelhout for a CU insurance run as the Golden Eagles went up 3-1 after six innings of play.
- In the top of the seventh, Alyssa Braam earned her first win as a Golden Eagle when she finished the game on a strikeout as CU took their opener in Florida 3-1.
Game Two: Spring Arbor 6 | Cornerstone – 4
- Spring Arbor got on the board first by scoring two unearned runs in the top of the second before Kaitlin Johnson was able to end the inning on a strikeout.
- SAU doubled their lead in the top of the third after a Cougar single drove in two runs to go up 4-0.
- Cornerstone's bats were quiet early in this one, but the Golden Eagles were able to make some noise with some savvy baserunning by Abbey Brower that landed her on third base.
- With Bower on third, McKenzie Butgereit singled to right center, bringing in the Golden Eagles first run of the game.
- In the top of the fifth, Spring Arbor added two more runs to extend their lead to 6-1.
- Cornerstone would not be deterred as their bats started to warm up in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Delaney Wilson had a sacrifice fly that brought Allisen Martz home to cut the Cougar lead to 6-2.
- Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Mackenzie Nagelhout singled to center, bringing Sydney Tilma home.
- A couple batters later, Sydney Carr delivered on a sacrifice fly to left field, which drove Jolie Groeneveld home.
- That would be the end of the scoring for Cornerstone as they dropped their second game in Florida 6-4.

What's Next?
Cornerstone will continue their games in Florida over spring break at the NTC Spring Games on Monday, March 7. The Golden Eagles will take on #18 Marion (Ind.) at 3:45 p.m., then take on Bethel (Ind.) at 6 p.m.
