Kissimmee, Fla. – A beautiful day in Florida turned sour as the Golden Eagles fell 16-3 against #18 Marian, then had their second game suspended due to lightning right when their bats started to heat up. Cornerstone got on the board early against the Marian Knights when
Mackenzie Nagelhout scored, but the rest of the game did not go in Cornerstone's favor. In the night cap, CU played an even game against the Bethel Pilots that was suspended in the top of the fifth due to lightning with score knotted 3-3. No make-up day or time has been determined at this time. Because Cornerstone only played one official game today, they only registered a change in the loss column, moving to 3-2 overall.
Game One: #18 Marian (Ind.) – 16 | Cornerstone - 3
- This game started well for the Golden Eagles when Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a double to center field.
- One batter later, McKenzie Butgereit hit a single, driving in Nagelhout for the game's opening run.
- Marian responded quickly in the bottom of the first scoring six runs on eight hits. A pair of doubles and a pair of singles did the damage to drive in those runs.
- In the top of the second, Cornerstone said "not so fast" as some singles, strategic steals, and a Jolie Groeneveld hit brought Allisen Martz and Abbey Brower home to cut the Marian lead in half 6-3.
- However, the Knights would show why they are ranked #18 in the NAIA as they continued their offensive assault with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
- Marian would score four more runs in the third, then tack on another insurance run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 16-3 lead into the middle of the fifth inning, invoking the mercy rule which ended the game.
Game Two: Suspended (Lightning) Tied 3-3 between Cornerstone and Bethel (Ind.)
*Please note all information and stats from this game will not be made official unless this game is completed
- Bethel got on the board first in this contest after the Pilots drove in a run on a grounder to the right side of the field.
- Cornerstone responded in the bottom of the first when Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a single into right field. The Pilot's right fielder flew the ball past the second baseman on a routine throw back to the infield and Nagelhout wisely started running the bases, somehow able to get all the way home to score the first run of the game for CU.
- In the top of the second, Bethel added two more runs with the first coming off of a single that brought the runner on third home and advanced another Pilot to third.
- With the next batter at the plate, a wild pitch brought home another Bethel run to give them a 3-1 advantage.
- The bats were quiet for both team until the bottom of the fourth when the Golden Eagles showed off some power.
- With Bailey Anson on first, Delaney Wilson smoked an inside pitch deep beyond the left center wall for a two-run HR to even up the game at 3-3. This swung momentum in Cornerstone's direction until…
- Lightning was spotted and a horn blared at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex, warning players and spectators to get off the field and concourse to take shelter. Officials decided to suspend the game and will determine when and where the game will be made up.
