MIDWAY, Ky. – The Golden Eagles continued their strong play, winning their second match in a row with a 3-0 sweep of Midway. Despite the set score, the match was close, with Cornerstone winning the first and third sets by only two points each.
Patrick Voloch was everywhere in this contest, recording 33 assists, 12 kills, four blocks, five kills, and an ace to lead Cornerstone.
Hubert Sliwinski was a force at the net, recording five blocks, continuing his strong defensive play. CU is now 9-16 this season.
Recap: Cornerstone – 3 | Midway (Ky.) – 0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23)
- Brunno Peres got off to a hot start with back-to-back kills to tie the match up 4-4 early in the first set.
- A Max Hernandez kill put CU up 11-8, but Midway responded with strong 5-0 run that featured four kills and a service ace to take 13-11 lead.
- Cornerstone kept it close behind the efforts of Patrick Voloch and Hubert Sliwinski who had a pair of kills each to cut the Midway lead to 201-18 late in the first.
- Then, Max Hernandez went on a mean streak, recording four kills in Cornerstone's last five points to take the opening set in a nail biter 25-23.
- Cornerstone and Midway continued to play tight volleyball, but Cornerstone was able to slightly pull away behind a Brunno Peres kill and a pair of Midway errors to take a 7-4 lead early in the second set.
- Cornerstone went on a pair of additional 3-0 runs, led by Hubert Sliwinski that eventually led to a 16-10 advantage.
- Cornerstone eventually took a 22-14 lead, but Midway was not done, going on a 5-1 run to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 23-19.
- Jacob Brinks was ready to end the set and he did, getting an assist from Patrick Voloch, to put down the kill and take the second set 25-20.
- Defensive standout Joshua Beaumont got his name on the offensive side of the stat sheet with a kill to give CU an early 7-5 lead.
- Midway eventually worked their way back to take a third set lead 12-11. But Joshua Beaumont had other things in mind, capping a 3-0 run with a kill to take a 14-12 lead for Cornerstone.
- Later on, Max Hernandez put down a big kill to take a 22-17 lead, but Midway stormed back with a 4-0 run to cut the Cornerstone lead to 22-21.
- Cornerstone was able to finish the set and win the match when Brunno Peres put a kill down to win the third set 25-23.
