First inning costs Softball in pair of losses vs. UM-Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – UM-Dearborn scored a combined seven runs in the first inning against the Golden Eagles on a windy and cold Friday afternoon leading to a pair of tough losses for CU, 6-3 in game one and 9-7 in game two. Cornerstone nearly completed comebacks in each game, but the Wolverines would shut the door to drop CU to 10-12-1, 5-5 WHAC on the year. Cornerstone has no break as they travel to (19) Madonna tomorrow for a road double-header.

Game One: UM-Dearborn – 6 Cornerstone - 3
  • Mikayla Meade got the start in game one and was roughed up early as four consecutive hits to start the game, three of those being extra bases led to four runs for the Wolverines in the first.
  • Kaitlin Johnson came in to begin the second and settled things down as UM-Dearborn did not score again until the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the third however, a two out Wolverine error in right allowed Jolie Groeneveld and Molly Poole to score and cut the CU deficit to 4-2.
  • UMD went back on top by three in the fourth after a wild pitch scored a run and made it 5-2.
  • Molly Poole doubled in the bottom of the same inning to again cut it back to two at 5-3.
  • In the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings Cornerstone had runners reach second and third base but they were unable to score.
  • The Wolverines added one final insurance run in the top of the sixth as the starter went all seven innings to complete the victory, 6-3 over Cornerstone in game one.

Game Two: UM-Dearborn – 9 Cornerstone - 7
  • Because Mikayla Meade was relieved so early in game one, she got the start in game two as well but not much changed as two home runs in the top of the first quickly put UM-Dearborn on top 3-0.
  • The speed of Jolie Groeneveld proved crucial in the bottom of the first as she stole a program record 18th base and later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Sydney Carr to make it 3-1.
  • Meade was left in this time as both starters kept the opponent off the scoreboard for the next two innings as it was still 3-1 headed into the fourth.
  • Meade was roughed up in the top of the fourth as two RBI singles led to her exit as she was relieved by Alyssa Braam. Braam struggled to find the strike zone however and a total of five runs came in to increase the UMD lead to its largest of the day at seven.
  • Molly Poole, Sydney Tilma, and Jocelyn Hernandez all had RBI hits in the bottom of the fourth as they refused to quit cutting the deficit back to four at 8-4.
  • A sacrifice fly added a run for UMD in the top of the fifth to increase the lead back to five.
  • Two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth off the standout Dearborn freshman Sydni Uhlenberg forced her to exit with two outs in the sixth. Ellinger returned after her complete game in game one and shut the door for her second save of the year as they held off the CU comeback and took game two 9-7.

By the Numbers:
18 – Jolie Groeneveld stole her 18th base of the year today which is a single season program record in Golden Eagle recordable history.
12/7 – Cornerstone outhit UM-Dearborn 12-7 in game two.
3 – Molly Poole led the team with three RBI on the day.

What's Next?
