LIVONIA, Mich. –
Delaney Wilson's power and
McKenzie Butgereit's timely hitting helped propel Cornerstone to a 4-3 win over 19
th-ranked Madonna on Saturday afternoon.
Alyssa Braam kept the high-powered Madonna offense in check to help the Golden Eagles split with their WHAC foe. Madonna was able to overcome a pair of CU home runs in game two to take the ladder of the twin bill. After today's action, the Golden Eagles move to 11-13-1 overall, 6-6 in the WHAC.
Game One: Cornerstone – 4 | Madonna – 3
- Madonna got the scoring started early when an RBI single gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
- The top of the fourth started off well for the Golden Eagles when Mackenzie Nagelhout singled to right field.
- A couple batters later, Delaney Wilson went yard with a two-run home run to left center, giving CU a 2-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Madonna regained their lead when a bases loaded single brough two runs home for the Crusaders, giving them a 3-2 lead.
- Cornerstone responded in the top of the sixth, getting two runners on with two outs. After a passed ball, both Golden Eagles advanced, putting runners on second and third base.
- Then, McKenzie Butgereit came to the plate and hit a single, bringing Allisen Martz and Maddy Chatman across the plate and giving CU a 4-3 lead.
- CU was able to shut down Madonna in the sixth and seventh innings, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-3 upset win over the 19th-ranked team in the NAIA.
Game Two: Madonna – 8 | Cornerstone – 4
- Delaney Wilson got game two started with a bang when she popped her second home run of the day, a two-run shot to left field, to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
- Madonna was able to get on the board in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning propelled by four hits and an untimely CU error to take the lead 3-2.
- Cornerstone leveled the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth when Sydney Carr hit a solo home run to left center.
- Madonna responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth, bringing home two runs to regain the lead 5-3.
- The Crusaders continued their offensive attack with another three-run inning in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending their lead to 8-3.
- In the top of the seventh, Cornerstone attempted a comeback when Jolie Groeneveld singled, sending Allisen Martz across the plate to cut the MU lead to 8-4. But that was all she wrote as CU could not score another run, splitting the double header with Madonna.

Cornerstone is back in action for a WHAC double-header when they host Lourdes on Monday, April 18. The first pitch of game one is slated for 3:30 p.m.
