SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles bounced back nicely after a tough 8-2 game one loss to Lourdes, winning game two 13-4 to earn a split in a pair of lopsided contests.
Jake Collins was dominant in the Golden Eagle victory and carried the offense, while the CU pitching staff did their job with some great relief pitching from
Andrew VanDyke. Cornerstone is now 17-17 on the year and 9-6 in WHAC play as they will be off for a while before hosting Cleary on Friday, April 22 for a 1 p.m. double-header.
Game One – Lourdes – 8 Cornerstone - 2
- Offense got started right away in game one for CU as a Jordan Wenzel double and Jake Collins single eventually resulted in a run on a fielder's choice making the game 1-0.
- Lourdes was able to tie it in the bottom of the first as a two out single came around to score after an error by Jordan Wenzel.
- Both pitchers settled in for the next two innings. Starter Adam Hotovy struck out the side in the third after a walk and a hit by pitch as the score remained 1-1.
- The fourth inning is where the Gray Wolves roughed up starter Hotovy, scoring five runs on six hits including a grand slam home run from Scott that made it 6-1.
- Grant Young tripled in the fifth and scored on a Ben Barnes ground out that cut the deficit back to four.
- Lourdes added one more run in the fifth and sixth off Alex Hayward and Devin Pulling as they secured an 8-2 game one victory.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 13 Lourdes – 4
- Lourdes scored first in game two with a run in the second and third innings on a pair of ground outs.
- CU led off the fourth with a pair of singles from Jake Collins and Austin Hurt and they both scored on a ground out and wild pitch to tie the game.
- Cornerstone took their first lead in the top of the fifth with a huge inning that saw four runs score. The inning saw five hits and was highlighted by an RBI triple from Austin Hurt to put the Golden Eagles on top 6-2.
- The Golden Eagles continued to score runs in five of the last six innings to blow the game open. Lucas Vega hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Grant Young hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 8-4.
- In the eighth, Cornerstone tacked on five more runs highlighted by a Jake Collins two-run home run to go on top 13-4.
- Starter Dylan VandenBerg went five innings allowing three earned runs and he was relieved by Andrew VanDyke who pitched a dominant next three innings for CU allowing just one more run to the Gray Wolves on three hits.
- Jared Riley in his first appearance since March 1 pitched the ninth and allowed just one hit as Cornerstone went on to win 13-4 in game two.
