Softball Knocks Out Rochester in Mid-Week Sweep

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone's offense was on display in a sweep over WHAC foe Rochester on Wednesday afternoon. A pair of home runs and timely hits gave the Golden Eagles an 8-0 win via mercy rule in the fifth inning. Then, in game two, CU continued to rack up hits, topping Rochester 7-1. After today's twin bill, the Golden Eagles move to 13-13-1 overall, 8-6 in the WHAC.

  • Cornerstone got off to solid start in the bottom of the second when Sydney Tilma singled to left field, driving home Molly Poole to give CU a 1-0 lead.
  • Still in the bottom of the second with two runners on, Jolie Groeneveld hit a stand-up triple, then advanced home on a throwing error from the short stop. Those two RBI and unearned run put the Golden Eagles up 4-0.
  • Sydney Carr kept the scoring alive with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the third to extend the CU lead to 5-0.
  • Later in the inning, Sydney Tilma hit another RBI single to bring McKenzie Butgereit home, putting Cornerstone up 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Jolie Groeneveld to score, putting CU up 7-0.
  • Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Maddy Chatman hit a walk-off solo home run to put the Golden Eagles up 8-0, enacting the mercy rule and ending the game with a Cornerstone victory.

Game Two: Cornerstone – 7 | Rochester - 1
  • Cornerstone kept the momentum going into game two when Jocelyn Hernandez delivered a single to center field, bring two across the plate for a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
  • Bailey Anson continued the damage in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to right field to extend the CU lead to 3-0.
  • Later in the inning, Alyssa Braam hit a triple down the right field line, driving two runs home to give Cornerstone an early 5-0 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles would continue their scoring assault after a Sydney Carr sacrifice fly brough home another run, going up 6-0 in the bottom of the second.
  • Rochester responded with a run of their own after a wild pitch brought home a run with the bases loaded, cutting the CU lead to 6-1.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jolie Groeneveld was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which brought McKenzie Butgereit home to put Cornerstone up 7-1.
