FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Golden Eagles fell in a tough double-header at Indiana Tech on Friday afternoon, losing game one in walk-off fashion and falling in game two 9-0 after giving up eight in the fourth inning to the Warriors. The losses drop Cornerstone back below .500 at 13-15-1, 8-8 WHAC on the year. CU will have a chance at redemption tomorrow as they travel to Northwestern Ohio starting at 1 p.m. for another WHAC double-header.
Game One: Indiana Tech – 6 Cornerstone - 5
- Cornerstone started things off with a bang as Jolie Groeneveld tripled to start the game. She later scored on an RBI single from Sydney Carr before the Warriors could record an out.
- Later in the inning, Molly Poole recorded a bases loaded walk for an RBI that made it 2-0 after the top of the first inning.
- The offense slowed down for the next few innings for CU. Freshman Alyssa Braam shut down Indiana Tech early allowing just one hit through the first two innings.
- Indiana Tech got on the board in the third with some small ball as a pair of singles came around to score on a groundout and passed ball to make it 2-2.
- In the fourth, Indiana Tech took their first lead of the game on a ground out from Barton that scored Berlin and made it 3-2.
- An error in the sixth allowed Jocelyn Hernandez to reach base which brought home the pinch runner Shylin Robirds.
- The back-and-forth continued as Indiana Tech got two back right away in the bottom of the sixth with a two RBI single from Trouba that made it 5-3.
- Down to their final three outs and the top of the lineup up, Cornerstone fought back to tie the game. Jolie Groeneveld got on base with a bunt single and that was followed by a trio of hits from Mackenzie Nagelhout, Sydney Carr, and Delaney Wilson to tie the game at five.
- Kaitlin Johnson came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh hoping to keep it tied, but was unable to do so as three singles with a sacrifice bunt mixed in allowed the Warriors to earn a walk-off winner in game one, 6-5.
Game Two: Indiana Tech – 9 Cornerstone – 0
- In game two, both teams starting pitchers held the opponent scoreless for the first two innings as Kaitlin Johnson did not allow a hit.
- Indiana Tech got on the board first in the bottom of the third after a hit by pitch came around to score as it was followed by IIT's first two first hits of the day to make it 1-0.
- In the fourth, the Indiana Tech offense exploded. The team recorded eight runs on seven hits with four of those off Johnson and five off relieve Mikayla Meade that brought their advantage to 9-0.
- In the top of the fifth, McKenzie Butgereit singled for the teams second hit of the day but CU was unable to respond as they fell 9-0 by the eight-run after five inning rule in game two.
