LIMA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles fell in a tough double-header at Northwestern Ohio on Saturday afternoon, losing game one in 9-1 in the fifth inning via the mercy rule. Game two was much closer as CU and UNOH were tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth before a four-run bottom of the sixth propelled the Racers to a 7-4 win. This pair of losses move the Golden Eagles to 13-17-1 overall, 8-10 in the WHAC.
Game One: Northwestern Ohio – 9 | Cornerstone – 1 (5 innings)
- Cornerstone got things started in the top of the first when McKenzie Butgereit was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which brought Sydney Carr across the plate for an early 1-0 lead.
- The bats were relatively quiet for the next few innings, with the Golden Eagles leaving a pair on in the third inning, but not generating much offense outside of that.
- UNOH broke things open in the bottom of the fourth when they recorded multiple hits, benefitted from an error, and saw four runs score to take a 4-1 lead.
- In the bottom of the fifth, the Racers got hot again, lighting up the scoreboard with a home run, a pair of doubles, and a single that brought five runs across the plate.
- After the final RBI single for UNOH, they took a 9-1 lead, which enforced the mercy rule with an eight-run victory. UNOH finished game one with 14 hits, while the Golden Eagles recorded two hits.
Game Two: Northwestern Ohio – 7 | Cornerstone - 4
- Game two started off a bit slower for both teams as neither team was able to score in the first two innings.
- Then, Northwestern Ohio lit up the scoreboard in the bottom of the third after a sac fly, a costly CU error, and an RBI single gave the Racers a 3-0 lead.
- Cornerstone responded in the top of the fourth after Allisen Martz hit a triple, bringing Moriah Sprague across the plate to cut the UNOH lead to 3-1.
- Later in the inning with two on, Maddy Chatman reached first on an error and ended up being out at second after she tried to advance. During that sequence, Allisen Martz scored, cutting the Racer lead to 3-2.
- The top of the sixth saw CU tie up the game 3-3 when Bailey Anson hit a single to center field, bringing Delaney Wilson across the dish.
- UNOH responded in the bottom half of the sixth with four runs of their own after a pair of home runs and an RBI double, regaining their lead at 7-3.
- The Golden Eagles would not go away, as Sydney Carr hit a double to left field, sending Abbey Brower home. That would be the last of the scoring in the game, with Northwestern Ohio taking game two 7-4.
