Softball puts up 10 spots in sweep of Concordia

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagle offense came alive in a much-needed double-header sweep of Concordia behind seven hits from Jolie Groeneveld, winning 10-9 in extra innings and 10-3. The wins end a four-game skid and move Cornerstone to 15-17-1, 10-10 WHAC on the year, tied for sixth in the conference standings with two games to play. CU will host Lourdes on Friday starting at 3 p.m. for senior day to end the regular season.

Game One: Cornerstone – 10 Concordia – 9 (in 8)
  • The sacrifice bunt put the Cardinals on top in the first as a Payton Lewis bunt scored Shannon McAlinden to give them a 1-0 lead off starter Kaitlin Johnson in game one.
  • Jolie Groeneveld singled to lead off the bottom of the inning and tied the game with a run scored on a Sydney Carr ground out.
  • Cornerstone erupted for four more runs to take the lead in the bottom of the second, highlighted by a pair of RBI triples from Allisen Martz and Mackenzie Nagelhout that made it 5-1.
  • Shannon McAlinden got a run back on an RBI single for Concordia in the top of the fourth with an RBI single.
  • Two more runs scored in the fifth that made it a one run game. CU looked to get out of the inning, but a two-out error by CU in center field prolonged the inning and allowed Concordia to score three more runs and retake the lead 7-5.
  • Concordia responded with an outfield error of their own that allowed Molly Poole to score and brought Cornerstone within one, 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Alyssa Braam came in and pitched the top of the sixth for CU and recorded the first and only 1-2-3 inning of the first game.
  • Cornerstone tied the game with another small ball run in the bottom of the sixth as Mackenzie Nagelhout scored on a sacrifice bunt from Delaney Wilson
  • The back-and-fourth then continued as another CU error allowed Concordia to go back on top by a run in the top of the seventh 8-7.
  • A redemption RBI double kept Cornerstone alive as Mackenzie Nagelhout redeemed her error with a hit that scored Bailey Anson, tied the game, and forced extra innings at 8-8.
  • Concordia scored a run on an RBI bunt single from Payton Lewis as they went on top 9-8 in the top of the eighth.
  • Cassidy Kane looked to secure the victory for CUAA, but Molly Poole hit a one out solo home run, the first of her career to tie the game at nine.
  • A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs and Jolie Groeneveld singled to score the pinch-hitter Moriah Sprague, giving Cornerstone the 10-9 game one victory.

Game Two: Cornerstone – 10 Concordia - 3
  • Cornerstone kept the offense going in game two as Jolie Groeneveld and Mackenzie Nagelhout each got on and came around to score on a ground out and a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 after one.
  • Jolie Groeneveld continued to crush the ball with a two RBI to dead center field to put CU on top 4-0 in the second.
  • After two strong innings from Alyssa Braam who started game two, two more Cornerstone errors allowed CUAA to get back within a run with a three-run top of the third.
  • Mikayla Meade entered and dominated in the circle for the Golden Eagles in the last four innings allowing just three hits and no runs.
  • Concordia struggled to find the strike zone in the fifth walking the bases loaded with two outs. Jolie Groeneveld took advantage with a bases loaded triple to put CU on top 7-3.
