Softball Splits with Lourdes on Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On senior day, the Golden Eagles came together to win one of two in their final regular season double header of the 2022 campaign. Before the contests began, CU honored their four seniors as they played their final home games in a Golden Eagle uniform: Allisen Martz, Kaitlin Johnson, McKenzie Butgereit, and Jocelyn Hernandez. In game one, Cornerstone came up with a close 3-1 win over Lourdes, led by Kaitlin Johnson in the circle. Game two was a different story as the Gray Wolves topped the Golden Eagles 7-2 behind a seven-run third inning. This split with Lourdes moves Cornerstone to 16-18-1 overall and 11-11 in the WHAC.

Game One: Cornerstone – 3 | Lourdes – 1
  • The first three inning were over pretty quickly, with the first five half innings being 1-2-3 innings.
  • The Golden Eagles threatened in the bottom of the third after getting two baserunners on, but could not get a run across the plate.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, CU finally lit up the scoreboard. After a Delaney Wilson triple, Molly Poole hit a grounder up the middle to send Wilson across the plate, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
  • The offense continued to churn for Cornerstone in the bottom of the fifth as CU scored two runs on two hits.
  • A Jolie Groeneveld walk and steal put her on second base. Then, Mackenzie Nagelhout hit a single, advanced on the throw, reached third on an error, all while Groeneveld scored a run giving CU a 2-0 advantage.
  • To finish out the bottom of the fifth, Sydney Carr hit single that sent Nagelhout home giving the Golden Eagles a 3-0 lead.
  • Lourdes threatened in the sixth, scoring a run after a pair of doubles, but could not do any more damage as Cornerstone came away with a game one victory 3-1.

Game Two: Lourdes – 7 | Cornerstone – 2
  • Cornerstone Mackenzie Nagelhout had herself quite an inning on defense to begin this game as she recorded all three outs on fly outs in the top of the second.
  • Right after that, Cornerstone got off to a strong start in the bottom of the second when Moriah Sprague hit a double to left center, bringing McKenzie Butgereit home, giving CU a 1-0 lead.
  • Lourdes responded in dramatic fashion with a seven-run third on seven hits and a Golden Eagle error.
  • Six of those seven hits for the Gray Wolves were singles, and they also benefitted from a walk that gave them a 7-1 lead.
  • CU did not threaten again until the bottom of the fifth when Allisen Martz got on base via a walk. Then, Jolie Groeneveld hit a double to right center, which was good enough to get Martz home, cutting the Lourdes lead to 7-2.
  • That was all there would be on offense in this one as Lourdes took game two 7-2 behind their big third inning.

By the Numbers:
3 – Hits on the day by senior McKenzie Butgereit to lead the Golden Eagles
7 – Runs scored by Lourdes in the third inning of game two. Outside of that inning, the Gray Wolves only scored one run in two games.
6 – Strikeouts by senior Kaitlin Johnson to lead the Golden Eagles to a victory. This was also Johnson's sixth win of the season.
