GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles took on the top ranked team in the WHAC on Tuesday afternoon in a unique road double-header played on their home field. CU nearly completed a comeback in each contest as they fell 6-5 and 5-2 against the Saints. The losses drop Cornerstone to 10-10-1 on the year and 5-3 in WHAC play. The Golden Eagles remain home on Friday as they take on Rochester for a 3:30 p.m. double-header.
Game One: (18) Aquinas – 6 Cornerstone - 5
- The aggressive base running Saints scored a run in each of the first three innings despite solid pitching from Kaitlin Johnson. In the first, AQ found the scoreboard on a double steal where the runner at second was caught stealing but the runner going home scored. In the second a run scored on a groundout and in the third a run came in on an RBI single.
- Cornerstone was held scoreless until the fifth when pinch hitter Jocelyn Hernandez brought home the first CU run on an RBI double that scored Molly Poole.
- Later in the fifth, Mackenzie Nagelhout hit an RBI single and McKenzie Butgereit hit a two RBI double that gave CU their first lead of the game at 4-3.
- Mikayla Meade came in and pitched the bottom of the fifth for CU looking to hold the lead.
- Aquinas was able to get to Meade and score three back in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles that made it 6-4.
- CU again put pressure on the Saints in the sixth, getting to the AQ bullpen. Aquinas put their third pitcher in the game after an Allisen Martz walk and Moriah Sprague double that had runners on second and third with one out.
- Molly Poole then bunted for a single that scored Martz and brought Sprague to third.
- Nina Bennett was able to get the next two CU batters out to maintain a 6-5 advantage for the Saints.
- After Nina Bennett got two outs but gave up two singles, Grace Maguire came in for AQ. She walked her first batter to load the bases, but then got the final out to give the Saints the 6-5 victory.
Game Two: (18) Aquinas – 5 Cornerstone - 2
- In game two, Aquinas got on the board right away in the first inning, scoring two runs off starter Alyssa Braam after a wild pitch and a fielding error.
- AQ starter Leah Ash sat Cornerstone down 1-2-3 at the plate in each of the first three innings to hold the 3-0 lead.
- In the fourth, Jolie Groeneveld hit her second home run of the year to cut the deficit to one at 2-1.
- Aquinas responded immediately with an RBI double that brought the lead back to two at 3-1.
- In the sixth, Cornerstone cut it back to one run with their second hit of the day with a Mackenzie Nagelhout RBI single to score Jolie Groeneveld.
- Two more RBI hits from the saints came home in the bottom of the sixth to increase the advantage to its largest at three, 5-2.
- Cornerstone had no answer as they would fall in game two, 5-2 recording just two hits.

Kaitlin Johnson pitched a day high seven innings with 4.1 in the first game and 2.1 in game two.

Jolie Groeneveld scored three of the teams seven runs on the day.
6 – Aquinas stole six bases on the day, three in each game.

Cornerstone will return to CU Softball Field on Friday, this time as the standard home team, as they host Rochester for a 3:30 p.m. WHAC double-header.
