GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles made up a game that they initially won 6-2, but a protest by the Wolverines due to an umpire error resulted in the game having to be replayed. In the replay, Cornerstone won by a larger margin, taking down UMD 14-2 in a big end of the regular season victory. CU ends the regular season at 23-18, 15-7 WHAC. Because Lawrence Tech won today, Cornerstone goes into the WHAC Tournament that begins on Thursday as the four seed and they will head to LTU where they will take on Madonna in the first round of the double-elimination event. Times and field location still yet to be determined for the tournament pod.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 14 UM-Dearborn - 2
- The game started at the protested point from back in the initial meeting. This meant CU was the road team and with two outs in the top of the first Isaac Tayes led things off with runners on first and second. Tayes struck out to end the one out first inning.
- CU was not held of the scoreboard for long though as JC Salinas tripled to lead-off the top of the second and then he scored on a Landon Poll RBI single to make it 1-0.
- Isaac Tayes and Lucas Vega each had two RBI hits in the top of the third that helped Cornerstone get out to a comfortable 5-0 lead.
- The runs continued in the fourth with a two-run home run from the red-hot Jake Collins, making it 7-0.
- In the sixth, UM-Dearborn hit two batters and JC Salinas singled to lead off the inning. Landon Poll then cleared the bases with a single to increase the CU advantage to double-digits.
- Adam Hotovy, who was the starter the first time these two teams played, cruised along for six innings of work before Brody Nelson pitched the seventh. UMD got a run in the sixth off Hotovy and one in the seventh off Nelson for their lone two runs of the game.
- Isaac Tayes and JC Salinas helped Cornerstone score four more in the bottom of the sixth, as Cornerstone cruised to a 14-2 seven-inning victory over the Wolverines.
