GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a back and forth first contest, the freshmen shined for the Golden Eagles in a 0-0 tie.
Calvin Curtis and
Tyler Corstange each had opportunities up front but CU was unable to score against a tough Spring Arbor squad in their first game.
Ethan Pike also looked great in net playing all 90 minutes and earned the shutout CU is now 0-0-1 on the year Cornerstone will now hit the road for the first time on Saturday as they travel to Trinity Christian for a 3:30 p.m. match.
The Highlights:
- Freshman Calvin Curtis got the first quality shot away in the fifth minute missing just high with his right foot.
- Calvin Curtis later earned the first yellow card of the game in the 20th minute for walking away with the ball on a Spring Arbor free kick.
- In the first half, Spring Arbor maintained much of the possession, but did not see any quality opportunities as they were unable to score.
- Tyler Corstange and Christian Galloway each recorded back-to-back shots in the first half that were saved by SAU keeper Jack Cristini.
- Each team had six shots in the first half as the score stayed 0-0.
- Spring Arbor earned two corner kicks earlier in the second half as they took both short and were unable to create a chance.
- In the 51st minute, Jeff Herrema recorded the best chance of the day with a shot off his left foot that hit the post.
- Jeff Herrema later recorded a yellow card for his first of the season as the score remained 0-0.
- In the final 10 mins, Cornerstone keeper Ethan Pike was challenged more than he had been all game. Nathan Ntalu in the final two minutes had two breakaway shots where he had Pike off his line, but he missed wide on both including what would have been the game winner with five seconds to go.
- Cornerstone tied 0-0 in their season opener.
