Rivalry win at Aquinas pushes Women’s Volleyball to 13 consecutive victories

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Head Coach Megan Lenhart and the Golden Eagles have now won 13 straight games, doing so in straight sets at rival Aquinas against many familiar faces including former coach Ryan Campbell. 13 straight wins is the longest under Coach Lenhart and pushes the 23rd ranked team in the country to 13-3 on the year and a perfect 4-0 in WHAC play. Cornerstone won crucial points late in each set to earn the sweep in a tough environment. The team will be tested yet again on Friday as they travel to receiving votes Indiana Tech for a 7 p.m. match.

Game Recap: #23 Cornerstone – 3 Aquinas – 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-17)
  • In a packed environment Patsy Morris made an outstanding play on the first point of the game, saving the ball off the ceiling to continue the rally, allowing Kaylee Dykema to record a block.
  • Aquinas responded with a 9-2 run to go on top 9-5.
  • With AQ up 10-7, another massive rally took place that ended in a kill from Olivia Keelean off the block to put CU within two.
  • Cornerstone regained the lead at 13-12 on a Patsy Morris service ace.
  • The teams kept trading leads. Abbi Perkins recorded a kill for the Saints to put them up 19-17 and force CU to use a timeout.
  • After the timeout, Kaylee Dykema was involved in two big plays combining with Aubrey Lenz for a block and recording a kill that tied things at 19.
  • Again, the Saints would go up two, but the clutch Golden Eagles rattled off five of the final six to take set one 25-23 on a kill from Kathryn Detweiler
  • Cornerstone took momentum into set two getting out to an 8-4 advantage on back-to-back service aces from Rylie Walters.
  • The lead increased to as large as six on a Brooke Nicholson attack error for Aquinas.
  • Aquinas was not done yet, going on a 9-2 run to take their first lead of set two at 19-18 on a big block from Claire Phillips and Samee Teachworth.
  • The two teams traded one-point leads, but again Cornerstone was clutch in crunch time scoring four of the last five points to take set two 25-22 the same way they did in set one with a Kathryn Detweiler kill.
  • In set three, Cornerstone scored the first three points highlighted by a block from Kylie Barron and Kathryn Detweiler
  • After Aquinas tied things at five, CU scored five in a row again that forced an early AQ timeout. Rylie Walters again saw back-to-back service aces in the run.
  • The ace continued to be a huge factor to the Golden Eagles success as Miranda German checked in after the timeout and recorded one to put CU on top 13-6.
  • Aubrey Lenz joined the ace party to put CU up 16-9.
  • Cornerstone cruised in the third set taking it 25-17 to win in straight sets and down their rival in a tough road match.
