SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles scored early to hold a 1-0 edge for much of the WHAC opener in Sylvania, but two second half goals proved to be the difference as Lourdes took down CU, 2-1. The game winning goal was scored in the 81
st minute by the Gray Wolves to drop Cornerstone to 3-2-3 on the year. CU returns to home field where they have yet to be beaten on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they will host Siena Heights for a conference battle.
The Highlights:
- In the seventh minute the first chance of the game took place on the fast turf for the Golden Eagles, as Boston Knapp saw a back-post header opportunity that was missed just high on a cross from Christian Galloway.
- The back-post was open again in the 10th minute as Boston Knapp found the net this time with his foot on a great ball from Tyler Corstange to go up 1-0 early.
- A fast break later happened for Lourdes and a lucky break on an offsides call prevented a PK as keeper Ethan Pike collided with the attacker inside the box.
- Things started to get a little chippy late in the first half as a yellow card was handed to the Cornerstone bench after back-to-back fouls on the Golden Eagles and Gray Wolves.
- Lourdes recorded a header shot in the 32nd minute by Victor Espinoza that was saved by keeper Ethan Pike to keep them on top 1-0.
- Two more yellow cards were handed out in the first half, one to Lourdes and one to CU keeper Ethan Pike. Despite much of the offensive momentum swinging toward LU, CU was able to keep them scoreless to lead 1-0 at the half.
- Cornerstone as they have all year got some good shots on goal out of the half. Christian Galloway and Boston Knapp each forced a save out of Lourdes keeper Alex Brock in the first 10 minutes of the period.
- Luke Stewart was tagged with a yellow in the 59th minute for the fourth card of the game.
- In the 63rd minute, Lourdes found an equalizer on a goal from outside the 18-yard box, tying the game at 1-1.
- Just after the goal, Lourdes player Darius Passley-Bennett received a yellow to increase the card total to five.
- Tyler Corstange recorded the sixth and final yellow of the game at the 72-minute mark.
- A fast break late in the contest would prove to be the difference, as Lourdes scored on a nice pass across the box. Victor Espinoza connected in the upper 90 of the goal on the pass from Diego Pereria in the 81st minute.
- Cornerstone had a free kick in the final minute looking to answer, but was unable to do so falling 2-1 on Saturday evening.
