CHICAGO, Ill. – The Golden Eagles have still yet to be beaten, ending Tuesday night's time in Chicago with a 1-1 tie against Saint Xavier to move to 2-0-2 on the year. Cornerstone continues the program's longest unbeaten start to a season since 2006 with the road tie.
Calvin Curtis joined the freshman goal scoring parade for the lone goal of the game, doing so in the 50
th minute before SXU found the equalizer in the 66
th minute. CU will now have some time off before returning home next Wednesday to host Grace Christian for a 4 p.m. match as part of a double-header with the women's soccer program.
The Highlights:
- The Cougars got off to the fast start, recording the first shot of the game on a corner that was saved by Golden Eagle keeper Ethan Pike.
- In the 10th minute, freshman Calvin Curtis recorded the first shot for CU after missing all last game due to injury. His shot was saved by keeper Joel Estrada as the game stayed scoreless.
- Neither team could get anything going on the fast turf in the middle of the first half as SXU earned a free kick in the 24th minute just outside the 18 for the next best scoring chance. The CU defense shut them down however as the score stayed 0-0.
- In the 33rd minute Tyler Corstange had an open shot for the best opportunity of the day, but it was blocked by a Cougar defender to keep it scoreless. The two teams went into the half tied at 0-0.
- Cornerstone had started to gain momentum at the end of the first half and they carried that right into the second as Calvin Curtis had two early shots that were both saved.
- In the 50th minute, Calvin Curtis recorded a third shot on goal from outside the 18-yard box and sailed one over the keeper and into the net for his first collegiate goal to put CU on top 1-0.
- After a yellow card was handed out to SXU, CU recorded three more shots looking to add insurance as they dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half.
- Saint Xavier on just their second shot off the half was able to find an equalizer however in the 66th minute. Andy Lomeli found an open Bernardo Dominguez in front of net to beat keeper Ethan Pike and tie the match at one. The goal is the first to be scored on CU all season.
- Jeff Herrema tried to respond quickly in the 69th minute with a free kick attempt on net, but it went high as the score remained 1-1.
- Saint Xavier received a second yellow card on the day in the 71st minute as Omar Aparicio saw yellow.
- In the 79th minute, Cornerstone earned a corner kick. The ball was placed in nicely by Christian Galloway to give David Mawi a shot but it missed wide.
- On a counter attack, the Cougars saw a great chance as Bernardo Dominguez looked for his second of the night. His shot hit the cross bar however to keep the game tied at one.
- CU saw another great free kick opportunity in the 84th minute looking to regain the lead. Jeff Herrema struck a ball that was headed by Tyler Corstange but the SXU keeper scooped it up off the bounce to again keep the score tied at one.
- Saint Xavier had a similar free kick two minutes later that landed in the six-yard box. The left footed shot from Dorian Mahone missed high and wide.

335 – Cornerstone went 335 minutes without allowing a goal to open the 2022 season.

Cornerstone heads back home to take on Grace Christian next Wednesday at 4 p.m. as part of a men's and women's soccer double-header.
