GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles have won their third game while tying two for their most wins through five games since 1988 with a dominant 4-2 victory over Grace Christian on Wednesday afternoon.
Tyler Corstange found the net twice in the victory, as three of the first four goals were scored in the first eight minutes of the game. Cornerstone is 3-0-2 as they hit a tough road stretch to end non-conference starting with Calvin on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Highlights:
- The Golden Eagles got off to an outstanding start, scoring in the fifth minute on a throw in from Jeff Herrema that was put away by Tyler Corstange.
- Less than a minute later, Boston Knapp found the net on a header off the pass from David Mawi to make it 2-0.
- David Mawi recorded another great pass in the eighth minute that led to a third goal and put the Golden Eagles on top 3-0, as again Tyler Corstange put the ball away for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
- Grace Christian finally found their footing, slowing down the attack of the Golden Eagles for the next few minutes and finding a few chances inside the CU 18-yard box.
- In the 15th minute Christian Galloway recorded a great shot that was saved by GCU keeper Luis Vicario right before the water break.
- The game began to get much more physical with four yellow cards handed out to Grace Christian in the middle of the first half. One led to a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles that was taken by Jeff Herrema. Herrema found the bottom left corner to score a fourth goal for CU and put them on top 4-0 in the 26th minute.
- Cornerstone took a 4-0 lead into the half on nine shots while the Tigers had none.
- The second half began with Boston Knapp going coast to coast and getting a shot off that was saved by Grace Christian to keep the game at 4-0.
- Grace Christian responded with a goal in the 53rd minute on new goalkeeper Jason Michalek as a great ball was put in the box on a free kick from Ethan DeWitt that was placed in the net by Logan Erickson to make it 4-1.
- In the 61st minute, Grace Christian was given their fifth yellow card of the game as Ethan DeWitt was carded.
- In the 85th minute, Grace Christian was given a penalty kick that Zak Termeer put in the net to cut the deficit to 4-2.
- Multiple subs entered the contest the remainder of the game as Cornerstone coasted in the final few minutes on their way to a 4-2 victory for their best start in program history since 1988.
