SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Senior
Patsy Morris joined a very elite club in the WHAC opener on Wednesday evening, becoming the seventh player in program history to achieve 2,000 career digs as the Golden Eagles swept Lawrence Tech. CU earned their second sweep victory of the year, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14 to improve to 6-3 on the year and start conference play at 1-0. Cornerstone comes home this weekend for the first time to play four matches in the AQ/CU Classic, starting with (RV) Saint Xavier on Friday at 3 p.m.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 Lawrence Tech – 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-14)
- Olivia Keelean got off to a strong start for CU, recording two kills in the first 10 points as the two sides sat tied at 5-5.
- Cornerstone went on a 4-0 run later that was capped off by an Olivia Keelean service ace to take a 10-7 advantage.
- It did not take long for Patsy Morris to get the fourth dig she needed to become the seventh player in program history to hit 2,000 career digs doing so mid first set.
- Lawrence Tech would keep it close the remainder of the set, but Cornerstone would never relinquish the lead. CU closed the set on a 6-1 run highlighted by a trio of kills from Rylie Walters to take set one, 25-18.
- Kylie Barron got hot in the beginning of the second set, recording three kills on a 5-1 run to put the Golden Eagles on top 8-6 in set two.
- Again, the Blue Devils kept it close but were unable to take a lead. Kaylee Dykema put the ball away twice to increase the CU lead to 13-9 and force LTU into a timeout.
- Errors allowed Cornerstone to make an even bigger run and increase their lead. CU kept pushing the issue, going on to take set two 25-15 on a kill from Kathryn Detweiler.
- The dominance continued into the third. Rylie Walters led set three off with a kill and just two points later added a pair of service aces to put Cornerstone on top 4-0.
- After a 3-0 run by LTU to cut their deficit to one, Cornerstone used another 4-0 run that saw kills from Kylie Barron and Kaylee Dykema out of the middle to go back on top 8-3.
- Everyone was getting involved down the stretch, leading from start to finish in set three as CU would go on to win 25-14 and sweep the Blue Devils.
