Women's Basketball falls to Lawrence Tech 82-76 in another overtime heartbreaker

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off an exciting win against Aquinas this past Saturday, Cornerstone was looking to build off that momentum turning victory by hosting Lawrence Tech. It was another slow start for the Golden Eagles as they got down early and fast. Kendall Fisher for the Blue Devils led the way for Lawrence Tech as she ran the show on offense. Cornerstone saw their largest deficit of 15 in the middle of the third quarter before mounting another late game comeback thanks to Kennedy Helderop making incredible threes to force overtime. Lawrence Tech was eventually able to sneak out of Grand Rapids with an 82-76 victory. Cornerstone will look to rebound against UNOH on Saturday, January 14.
 
 
Game Highlights:
  • First Quarter
    • Fifth year senior, Kendall Fisher started put the first points of the game on the board for the Blue Devils. Following that, Fisher hit a jumper to start the momentum for Lawrence Tech.
    • Jaxi Long responded for the Golden Eagles with a nice turn around hook to put two points on the board Cornerstone.
    • With a slow start to the game, Cornerstone struggled with finishing could not finish or hit a three pointer. Kaycee Sluiter hit her first jumper of the game to close the gap, but Jade Faris responded for the Blue Devils.
    • Kennedy Helderop hit the first three of the game for Cornerstone to cut Lawrence Tech's lead to one point. However, two strong moves from Kylee Batey and Jade Faris started the run for the Blue Devils. After being fouled in the paint, Faris found herself at the free throw line bringing the Blue Devils up 14-7 after an eight-point run.  
    • Closing the first half, Cornerstone began to fall behind as Kendall Fisher, Jade Faris, and Kate Jacobs of Lawrence Tech fought to put points on the board and increase the lead to ten. Olivia Kubik brought energy for the Golden Eagles as
  • Second Quarter
    • The defense of Lawrence Tech was a problem for the Golden Eagle offense as they have not been able to run any of their offense as Audrey Dreyer goes to the line for a pair of free throws.
    • Kendall Fisher for the Blue Devils has run the point well as she has 10 of their 26 points, early in the second quarter. Setting the tone for the game as it is 26-14 Lawrence Tech.
    • Olivia Kubik drills a long three-pointer that forces the Lawrence Tech timeout as the offense for the Golden Eagles have started to find their rhythm. 30-21 Lawrence Tech with 5:53 remaining in the second quarter.  
    • The Golden Eagles have been able to slow down Kendall Fisher as they have gone on a 6-0 run to make it 32-27 as Olivia Kubik has led the offense for Cornerstone.
    • Lawrence Tech closed the second quarter on a high note scoring at will as they lead 36-29. Kendall Fisher has been the entire offense for the Blue Devils as she has been running the show and scoring at will.
  • Third Quarter
    • Lawrence Tech opens the second half with a 6-point run. The Golden Eagles struggled to find their rhythm offensively as they were swatted in the paint.
    • Olivia Kubik put points on the board to try and end the scoring drought for Cornerstone, but the Blue Devils continued to dominate as Kendall Fisher hit multiple jumpers.
    • The Blue Devils found their biggest lead of 15 before Cornerstone would mount a little run before the end of the quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter
    • Started the quarter off with energy from a layup from Stephanie Ainsworth and two free throws from Mackenzie Stein. Olivia Kubik with another layup bringing the score 52-50.
    • Tied at 6:42 for the first time as Kennedy Helderop capitalized on a no look pass from Stephanie Ainsworth.
    • The momentum of the game hit its highest point as the Blue Devils and Lawrence Tech began to battle it out. Going back and forth, Lawrence Tech Addie Nagel went on a six-point run to bring Lawrence Tech on top.
    • As the final seconds ticked down, the Golden Eagles found themselves fighting at the free throw line trying to cut the Blue Devil's lead down to 4 with 48.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Addie Nagel continued her shooting streak as she went 3-6 at the line.
    • A crucial three from Kennedy Helderop brought the score 63-66 with 32.7 seconds left on the clock. Two free throws from Addie Nagel for the Blue Devils ,ade it back to a five-point game. Cornerstone fought to stay in the game as Kennedy Helderop swished another three at 18.0 seconds. Strong defense from Cornerstone resulted in a jump ball putting the passion back to the Golden Eagles. Stephanie Ainsworth gets her own rebound to tie the game with 6 seconds left on the clock and send the teams into overtime.
  • Overtime
    • Cornerstone and Lawrence Tech both put points early in the first moments of overtime. At 3:00, Helderop made her way to the free throw line going 1-2. Bringing Cornerstone to its first lead of the game, 71-70.
    • Maggie Long capitalized at the free throw line for the Blue Devils bringing it to a two-possession game with just a minute left in the game. Addie Nagel of the Blue Devils also finds herself at the line increasing the lead to 6 points with just 30 seconds left to go. Kennedy Helderop pulled another pivotal three pointer trying to keep the Golden Eagles in the game. Two free throws from Maddison Fulks were matched by Maggie Long and Kylee Batey to keep Lawrence Tech leading.
    • The Blue Devils finished the final seconds of the game at the free throw line bringing the final score of 82-76.
 
 
 
By the Numbers
20 – Kennedy Helderop led the way with 20 points with key baskets down the stretch
46/37 – Lawrence Tech outrebounded Cornerstone 46-37 for the game.
1 – Lawrence Tech made one three for the game.
 
 
What's Next?
The Golden Eagles stay home as they host UNOH to start the second half of conference play on Saturday, January 14th at 1 p.m.
