SYLVANIA, Ohio – After dropping three of their last four games, Cornerstone came into this game against Lourdes in need of a victory. After getting down early, the Golden Eagles fought back, and the battle later ensued. Lourdes would throw a punch and Cornerstone would respond right back with one of their own. It was a game that was tough and physical that saw it get a little chippy at times. Cornerstone was up for that task and used their physicality to overpower Lourdes in the second half. The victory pushes Cornerstone to 14-7 (8-5) on the season. This victory is a potential momentum changer for men's basketball as Indiana Tech comes into town on Wednesday, January 25 for a 7:30 p.m. game.
Game Highlights
- First Half
- The first five-minutes of the game was all Lourdes as they got out to their largest lead of the game 15-6 that saw Jackie Harris and Little Anderson both have five-points apiece while Cornerstone was struggling to find scoring early.
- Cornerstone used the next three-minutes to go on a 11-2 to run that saw the game tied 17-17 thanks to five-points from Zac Velthouse as Eli Steffen got the offense out and running.
- A layup by Toby Woolcock gave Cornerstone their first lead of the game 23-22 with 10:35 remaining in the game as the Golden Eagles have seemed to turn the tide of the game.
- Cornerstone and Lourdes used the next four-minutes that saw almost no missed baskets from either side as Zac Velthouse scored another five-straight points to give Cornerstone the 37-32 lead with 5:44 remaining in the game.
- The Golden Eagles were stuck on 37 points for the next four-minutes while Lourdes would retake the lead 38-37 before Cory Ainsworth hit a nice hook-shot in the paint to retake the lead 39-38.
- Jackie Harris would hit a very tough contested three with 0:01 second remaining in the first half to give Lourdes the lead 41-39.
- Second Half
- Cornerstone set the tone to start the second half as Carter Nyp would throw down an electric dunk that sparked a quick outburst of scoring for the Golden Eagles. Eli Steffen scored next possession to give Cornerstone the lead back 43-41.
- The Golden Eagles continued to build on their early second half momentum as they extended their lead 50-43 before Clif Snow would hit a shot clock buzzer three to stop the drought for the Gray Wolves, making it 50-46 with 15:39 remaining.
- The next three minutes were all Cornerstone again as they found themselves up 59-50 after a Toby Woolcock put back layup.
- The offense run by Eli Steffen continued to put the pressure on the Gray Wolves as they found themselves with their biggest lead of the game 75-63 with 5:40 remaining in the game. Carter Nyp and Cory Ainsworth have taken over the scoring for Cornerstone.
- Lourdes would not miss any three they took as they continued to hit them to cut the lead to four, 79-75 with just over three-minutes remaining.
- To finish out the game, Cory Ainsworth would hit clutch baskets that would keep Cornerstone just out of reach, as the Golden Eagles would eventually seal the game at the free throw line, winning 91-84.
