Men’s Basketball falls at Rochester 82-76

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Cornerstone led for a good portion of the first half, but Rochester would respond to take the lead at the break and then never let it go, as they take down CU 82-76. Cory Ainsworth recorded a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with 18 points, but it was not enough as the Golden Eagles fall to 14-9, 8-7 WHAC on the year. CU looks to end the skid back at home on Wednesday vs. UM-Dearborn at 7:30 p.m.

Game Highlights:

First Half:
  • Carter Nyp took advantage of his smaller defender in the first few minutes, scoring the first four Golden Eagle points of the game right at the rim.
  • The three then began to fall as Carter Nyp and Luke Rowlinson hit a pair back-to-back for a 6-0 run that put CU on top 17-9 with 13:28 to play in the half.
  • Rochester would continue to hang around, but Cornerstone would not relinquish the lead. Cory Ainsworth made an outstanding spin move inside the paint for another easy two to keep the post play going and keep CU on top by eight, 25-17.
  • Rochester responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by a three from Damarion Bonds to get within three at 25-22 before using their first timeout with 8:18 to go in the half.
  • A three from the logo by Rochester's Damarion Bonds would tie the game at 27 with just under six minutes to go in the half.
  • Rochester continued to lock down on defense and find their shot, taking their first lead since the opening minutes on a James Ballard layup, 29-27.
  • The Warriors moved the run to 11-0 which led to the first Golden Eagle timeout down 35-27.
  • Luke Rowlinson hit a big three for the final bucket of the first half to get Cornerstone within six at the break, 38-32.
Second Half:
  • Early in the second half, Eli Steffen made a great no look pass to Cory Ainsworth to bring Cornerstone within six. Rochester had a response for every CU bucket though, remaining on top by eight with 16:35 to play.
  • After Eli Steffen hit a three to cut it to five, Rochester got the crowd into it with a high-flying alley-oop dunk from James Fisher.
  • With 13:38 remaining, the Warriors would increase their lead to the largest of the game at 53-41.
  • The veteran Golden Eagles inched back into the game, as a pair of made free throws from Mason Brooks made it a five-point deficit with 10:49 to play.
  • Luke Rowlinson again hit a three just a few moments later that brought it even closer at four.
  • Rochester responded with an 11-4 run highlighted by an and-one bucket from Kaylein Marzette to get their lead back to its largest of the game, 67-55.
  • In the final three minutes, Eli Steffen led CU on a 9-0 run to get right back into the game and trail 74-69 with 2:06 to play.
  • Despite another great effort to comeback by the Golden Eagles, Rochester would hold on to earn the season split and win 82-76 at home.
