ST. MARY'S OF THE WOODS, Ind. – The third-year program continued their successful weekend with two more victories. A 3-0 sweep of St. Mary of the Woods 25-20, 25-21, 25-19 and a 3-0 sweep of University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy 25-16, 25-13, 25-22. The Galanes brothers led the way in kills with
Andrew Galanes having 10 against STM and
David Galanes having 14 against UHSP.
Patrick Voloch had 28 assists both games to help Cornerstone to two wins. The Golden Eagles will be right back in action on Tuesday, January 31 for their home opener against Aquinas.
Game One: Cornerstone – 3 STM – 0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19)
- First Set
- Cornerstone jumped out ahead right out of the gate going up 5-1 thanks to two kills by Joshua Beaumont and a service ace by David Galanes.
- St. Mary of the Woods went on an 8-5 run scoring four straight points to make it a 10-9 Cornerstone lead.
- Cornerstone responded with a little run of their own that saw them extend their lead 16-11 thanks to kills by Andrew Galanes.
- Cornerstone and STM battled it out going point-for-point to finish out the set as Andrew Galanes finished the set with a service ace.
- Cornerstone wins set one 25-20.
- Second Set
- It was a battle to start the second set as Cornerstone and STM are tied 6-6 as David and Andrew Galanes has kills for the Golden Eagles.
- Max Hernandex and Patrick Voloch got back-to-back kills as Cornerstone took their first lead 10-9 in set two.
- Cornerstone used a four-point run to take their largest lead of the set 19-13 thanks to a few errors by STM and a kill by Ethan Walker.
- STM tried to use a late run to catch up to Cornerstone, but Max Hernandez said no and finished set two on a high note with a kill.
- Cornerstone wins set two 25-21.
- Third Set
- STM got out to an early 5-3 lead thanks to errors by the Golden Eagles.
- Cornerstone responded with a nice 3-0 run to take the lead 6-5 thanks to two service aces by Andrew Galanes.
- The Golden Eagles used another quick run that forced STM to use a timeout as they extended their lead 13-9 thanks two a few errors by STM and a kill by Landon Waltz.
- St. Mary forced Cornerstone to use one of their own timeouts as STM pulled within one 14-13.
- Cornerstone used a nice 5-3 run to extend their lead 19-16 thanks to kills by Andrew and David Galanes and Landon Waltz.
- Cornerstone finished the third set on a high not going on a 6-3 run thanks to erros by STM and a finishing kill by Landon Waltz.
- Cornerstone wins set three 25-19 and the game 3-0.
Game Two – Cornerstone – 3 UHSP – 0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-22)
- First Set
- Cornerstone got off to a hot start with a quick 5-0 run to force the UHSP timeout thanks to kills by David Galanes and a service ace by Patrick Voloch.
- Cornerstone has been the aggressors to start the game as they are now leading 13-6 after a Cade Meza service ace.
- UHSP used a quick run to make it 13-10 but Joshua Beaumont turned the tide with a nice kill.
- Cornerstone got out to a 19-14 lead that forced the UHSP timeout.
- The Golden Eagles would finish set one strong with 6-2 run thanks to another service ace by Cade Meza.
- Cornerstone wins set one 25-16.
- Second Set
- Just like set one, Cornerstone came out hot getting out to a 6-1 lead thanks to attack errors by UHSP.
- Cornerstone forced UHSP to use their first timeout as they extended their lead 12-7 after a kill by Landon Waltz.
- Cornerstone used a 6-3 run out of the timeout to go up 18-10 that forces UHSP to use their final timeout.
- Cornerstone would wrap up set two on a high note finishing on a 7-3 run that saw kills by David Galanes, Ethan Walker, and Patrick Voloch.
- Cornerstone wins set two 25-13.
- Third Set
- It was a battle to start set three as Cornerstone and UHSP are tied 5-5 early after a kill by Ethan Walker.
- Both teams have been going kill-for-kill as the game is still tied 10-10 as neither team has taken advantage of the errors.
- Cornerstone used a nice 4-0 run to finally grab the momentum in set three 14-10 thanks to a service ace by Jackson Bush.
- This has been a close match as Cornerstone is leading 20-17 late in set three.
- Cornerstone would finish the set strong thanks to a few errors by UHSP and a kill by Max Hernandez gave Cornerstone the win.
- Cornerstone wins set three 25-22 and the game 3-0.
