Defense dominates as Men’s Basketball downs (RV) Rochester 70-57

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles suffocated receiving votes Rochester on the defensive end, holding them to 35% from the field for a 70-57 victory on Wednesday evening. Luke Rowlinson continued his hot shooting with a team high 21 points in the win, while Carter Nyp recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Cornerstone is now 12-4, 6-2 WHAC as they continue their fight to stay at the top of the standings. CU will next travel to rival Aquinas on Saturday, January 7 for a 6 p.m. game. 

Game Flow
  • Rochester got off to a fast start offensively, hitting an early three to go up 5-2. 
  • Cory Ainsworth gave Cornerstone the lead back, 6-5 with a bucket in the post. 
  • The two teams would trade buckets, but Rochester would hold much of the lead until it was 16-15 with 12:32 to play in the half. 
  • Cory Ainsworth hit a layup to begin a 6-0 run and put CU on top 21-16. They would never trail again in the game. 
  • Connor Dykema got involved in the action with back-to-back layups to put Cornerstone on top 29-21 with 3:52 to go in the half. 
  • Zac Velthouse scored the last five points for the Golden Eagles in the half with an and-one bucket and a tough layup to bring the lead to 36-27 at the break. 
  • Cornerstone maintained a lead throughout the second half, bringing the advantage to 12 with a three from Luke Rowlinson and a layup from Carter Nyp
  • Carter Nyp was one of the few to knock down both free throws on either side in the second half doing so to make the lead 14. After Rochester responded with two, Nyp then hit a three to bring the lead to 50-35.  
  • Over roughly the next three minutes of action, the two teams combined for only five points as Cornerstone held a 53-45 advantage with eight minutes to play. 
  • Down the stretch, anytime Rochester would cut it to single digits Luke Rowlinson would respond with big buckets. 
  • Neither team could hit free throws down the stretch, but it did not affect the Golden Eagle lead due to strong defense on the other end as they held on to win 70-57. 
 
By the Numbers 
16/14 – Carter Nyp recorded his first double-double of the year and a career record for rebounds with 14 tonight. 
16 – Cornerstone out-rebounded Rochester by 16 on the day with 49 to their 33. 
42 – CU dominated the paint, scoring 42 of their 70 inside.

Cornerstone travels to rival Aquinas looking to win their 12th straight against AQ on Saturday, January 7 at 6 p.m.
