Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – After a week off, Cornerstone hit the road to Lawrence Tech and nearly recorded the reverse sweep but fell in five sets. CU got off to good starts in both of the first two sets but would fall behind 2-0 before responding to tie things at 2-2. In the fifth, LTU got off to a big lead and would eventually take the match dropping Cornerstone to 10-11, 5-6 WHAC. Cornerstone returns home on Friday for their next match vs. Siena Heights at 7 p.m.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Lawrence Tech – 3 (20-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-20, 8-15)
Set One:
- After a week off, Cornerstone got off to a strong and refreshed start, going on an 8-3 run to open set one. CU saw everyone get involved with three kills from three different players, a block, and a service ace from Alli Pickard. LTU would use their first timeout.
- Lawrence Tech responded with a 6-0 run to take a 12-11 lead on the Juliana Bollini serve. Bollini recorded multiple service aces in the run to force CU to use their first timeout.
- A block from LTU's Riley O'Connell and Marriya Henry increased their lead to 17-13.
- Cornerstone would use their second timeout after another Juliana Bollini service ace made it 19-14.
- The Golden Eagles could not recover as they would fall 25-20 on a set point kill from Lindsay Hubler.
Set Two:
- Cornerstone once again got off to a strong start in set two leading 4-1. Eliza Thelen recorded back-to-back kills in the run for CU.
- Hannah Giere recorded a kill to increase the lead to four at 10-6.
- The service ace again cost Cornerstone. Lindsay Hubler recorded three in a row to spark a 5-0 LTU run and take a 13-11 lead.
- Another 5-0 Blue Devil run increased their advantage to 18-12.
- Cornerstone stormed all the way back to tie the set at 21 on a Emmalee Murphy kil.
- It would not be enough as Lindsay Hubler recorded back-to-back kills to give Lawrence Tech set two, 25-23.
Set Three:
- Needing to find a set victory, Cornerstone came to play in set three. An Alli Pickard service ace helped Cornerstone get out to an 8-3 advantage.
- A big block from Emmalee Murphy and Eliza Thelen brought the lead to 14-6.
- Lawrence Tech could not get out of their own way the rest of the set as one more Hannah Giere service ace and a few attack errors gave CU the third set, 25-12.
Set Four:
- Trailing 6-4 in set four, Alli Pickard again was crucial at the service line with two aces to tie things at six.
- Emmalee Murpy and Kylie Barron then combined for a block to give CU the lead.
- Cornerstone later went on a 4-0 run to take a 15-11 advantage.
- The Golden Eagles would carry the lead the rest of the way and win 25-20 to force a fifth set on kills from Gabrielle VerBerkmoes and Emmalee Murphy.
Set Five:
- Lawrence Tech responded well in the fifth scoring nine of the first 10 points. Riley O'Connell recorded five kills in the run for LTU.
- Kylie Barron recorded a kill to end the run and make it 9-2.
- CU tried to comeback but was unable to overcome the early deficit. Lindsay Hubler recorded the match point kill to take set five 15-8.
By the Numbers:
18 –
Emmalee Murphy tied her career second best mark of 18 kills in the match.
14-11 – Both sides saw a lot of aces on the day with LTU recorded 14 and CU recording 11.
Alli Pickard led the Golden Eagles with five.
12/23 –
Hannah Giere recorded a double-double with 12 kills and a career high 23 digs.

Cornerstone returns home to take on Siena Heights at 7 p.m. this Friday for their next match inside Mol Arena.
