GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone celebrated their lone senior in
Kylie Andras and left with a 3-0 sweep over Lourdes. It was a must needed rebound victory for the Golden Eagles as they dominated in every aspect of the match today. Hitting .267 as a team compared to Lourdes .103 with
Gabby VerBerkmoes leading the way with 10 kills. Cornerstone will be back in action as they look to take down rival Aquinas at the Saints on Wednesday, October 18 starting at 7 p.m.
Game Recap:
First Set – Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 13
- Cornerstone got off to a good start in the first set going up 4-1 thanks to kills by Jada Thomas and Kylie Barron.
- Lourdes answered with a 6-3 run to tie the match 7-7 early in the first set thanks to a solid attacking from their hitters.
- The Golden Eagles would respond with a 4-0 run to take a 11-7 lead that was started by an Aubrey Lenz service ace.
- Cornerstone continues to lead in the first set as after a kill from Eliza Thelen and few attacking errors from the Gray Wolves makes it a 15-10 match.
- Lourdes calls their first timeout of the match as Cornerstone went on a 3-0 run after two kills from Kylie Barron and a service ace from Kylie Andras that makes it 18-11.
- Cornerstone would finish the first set strong winning 25-13 off a kill from Kylie Barron and multiple errors from Lourdes.
Second Set – Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 21
- Lourdes started off the second set on a 3-1 thanks in part to good serving from Mckenna Hall.
- Cornerstone would respond nicely with a kill from Kylie Barron and Hannah Giere to tie the match 5-5.
- Cornerstone took a 9-7 lead thanks to a big solo block from Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Lourdes would respond with a 5-3 run to retie the match 12-12 as both teams continue to go back-and-forth in the second set.
- Lourdes had to use their first timeout as a 3-1 run gave Cornerstone a 17-14 thanks to a service ace from Julianna Brower.
- Cornerstone continued to pull away from the Gray Wolves as they now lead 21-16 after a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Lourdes used a 4-0 run to force Cornerstone to use a timeout as the Golden Eagles only lead by one, 21-20.
- Cornerstone would respond with a 3-0 run to make it a 24-21 lead as Lourdes would use their final timeout. Jada Thomas and Hannah Giere had kills for Cornerstone.
- Jada Thomas would get the final kill for the Golden Eagles as they win set two 25-21.
Third Set – Cornerstone – 25 Lourdes - 15
- Cornerstone and Lourdes battled back-and-forth in the beginning of the third set as Julianna Brower recorded back-to-back service aces to give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 lead.
- Lourdes had to use their first timeout as back-to-back kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes gives Cornerstone a 10-4 lead in the third set.
- The Golden Eagles continue to extend their lead as a service ace from Emma Whitley makes it a 16-7 Golden Eagle lead.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes continued her good game with another kill as she would add a block with Aubrey Lenz to force Lourdes to call their final timeout as the Golden Eagles lead 20-11.
- Cornerstone would finish off the Gray Wolves winning the final 25-15 on a kill from Hannah Giere.
