GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone men's soccer squad took on 10-3-2 (6-1-1 WHAC) Madonna tonight (Oct. 21) while honoring
Caleb Griffith during Senior Night prior to the match. The Crusaders scored first, but a late goal from
Eli Leegwater tied the match, resulting in a 1-1 draw. This result moves Cornerstone to a 4-8-4 record that now features a 2-5-2 WHAC record.
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 1, Madonna – 1
First Half:
- Madonna earned an earned chance in the 7th minute after Ryushin Hirami was sent through. He took a rip from the right side of the 18 yard box, but sent it over the net.
- The game slowed down following that chance, with no real scoring opportunities occurring until there was just 13 minutes remaining in the half.
- Madonna sent a cross into the box with 13 minutes left on the clock and managed to generate a good scoring chance with a header.
- With five minutes remaining in the half, Ren Suzuki of Madonna went through onto net and was taken out by Roberto Gutierrez in the 18-yard box. This resulted in the ref pointing to the spot for a penalty kick.
- Andres Gomez Rubiano stepped up to take the penalty kick and tucked it away into the bottom left of the net to give Madonna a 1-0 advantage.
Second Half:
- Cornerstone played a long pass just outside of the Madonna 18-yard box early in the second half, but Tyler Corstange couldn't quite settle it.
- The ball bounced to Boston Knapp, but he just missed the net to the left.
- With 33 minutes left on the clock, Ben Wolf sent a free kick into the 18-yard box and Corstange put the ball on target with a header, but it was easily saved by Madonna.
- Leegwater managed to tuck the ball into the net off of a Cornerstone corner to tie the match at ones. This was Leegwater's second career goal.
- Nathan Souza De Castro of Madonna was awarded the first yellow card of the match with 13 minutes remaining for some after-play extracurriculars.
- The Crusaders turned up the pressure following the yellow card and kept the ball inside the Cornerstone half for nearly the entirety of the final 13 minutes.
- Madonna had six corner kicks during the final 13 minutes, but Cornerstone held on for the 1-1 result.
By the Numbers:
8th – Cornerstone is currently in a three-way tie for eighth place in the WHAC standings as Siena Heights, Cleary, and Cornerstone all have eight points.
11-8 – Madonna outshot Cornerstone 11-8 throughout the entirety of the match.
2 – This is the second consecutive match that the Golden Eagles have taken points from a top-four WHAC opponent.

Cornerstone is back at home this upcoming Wednesday (Oct. 25) to take on the Rochester Warriors.
