GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone women's soccer team took on Madonna for its last home match of the season this afternoon (Oct. 21). First Half:
  • Gabriella Sapia of Madonna had a strong early chance that nearly resulted in an early lead.
  • Both teams had several corner opportunities in the first 15 minutes, but neither side managed to generate any threatening opportunities.
  • Gracie Gortmaker put a fantastic cross-body shot on target 17 minutes into the half, but the Crusader keeper parried the shot away.
  • The first half remained quiet for the next 20 minutes of the half with both teams struggling to generate offense in the wet conditions.
  • Madonna forward, Sara Castillo, broke the draw with ten minutes left to play in the half. She curled the shot around Morgan Scholten for a 1-0 Crusader advantage.
  • The Crusaders continued to try and force the attack through Castillo, but the CU defense tightened up to bring the game to halftime with the score still at 1-0.
Second Half:
  • Gortmaker picked up her third shot of the game with an early opportunity that missed wide.
  • The second half continued the quiet and defense theme. With just ten minutes remaining in the game, each team had only one shot in the second half.
  • Gortmaker had another opportunity with ten minutes left, but an incredible slide tackle by Madonna in the box sent the ball to safety.
  • Tori Woodwyk generated another opportunity and put a shot on target, but Madonna's keeper, Veronica Kozak, parried the ball away.
  • The visitors grew the lead to two after the ball bounced around the Cornerstone box until Molly Cote tapped it in.
  • Just 30 seconds later, Ella Bosscher tapped in a goal for CU off of an assist from Mackenzie Kramer.
  • The goal would prove to be just a consolation goal as Madonna went on to win 2-1 after the time expired.
