Comeback falls just short as Women’s Soccer falls 3-2 at Rochester

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.  – The Golden Eagles fell in a heartbreaker on Wednesday afternoon, 3-2 at Rochester. After trailing 2-0, Cornerstone came all the way back to tie it in the final minutes. Rochester would then respond with a game winner with just a few minutes remaining to earn the 3-2 win over CU. The loss drops CU below .500 at 6-7-2, 2-6-2 WHAC. Cornerstone now needs a win at Concordia to secure a spot in the WHAC Tournament without needing help. Action against the Cardinals will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in Ann Arbor. 
 
Game Recap: Cornerstone – 2 Rochester - 3
First Half
  • Cornerstone saw an early chance as Tori Woodwyk took the first shot of the game in the third minute. She would miss wide left to keep things scoreless. 
  • Rochester then began a stretch of possession that saw three shots. The third attempt in the ninth minute would find the net, as Sammi Springer scored her first goal on an assist from Faith Staley. 
  • Kailey Dodge nearly found a response just over a minute later with a shot that was saved by Warrior keeper Noemie Tartrou. 
  • Despite the Golden Eagles recording most of the offensive chances the next 20 minutes, Sammi Springer would score again in the 33rdminute to make it 2-0. 
  • The Golden Eagles would trail 2-0 at the intermission. 
Second Half
  • Cornerstone came out firing in the second half, looking to make a comeback. Defender Kaitlynn Sal entered the 18-yard box and would score her third goal of the year in the 61st minute off a corner kick assist from Gracie Gortmaker. CU cut the deficit in half at 2-1. 
  • Momentum continued to sit with the Golden Eagles in the second half. Sierah Adams checked in and immediately got a shot off that was blocked by the Warrior defense. CU then nearly saw a break away, but an offsides call would give Rochester a break in the 66th minute. 
  • In the 70th minute, CU saw a trio of shots come. Emily Ake, Myra Hunt, and Tori Woodwyk all recorded chances but they were all blocked by Rochester. 
  • Finally, the Golden Eagles were able to find the equalizer in the 84th minute. Gracie Gortmaker scored on a pass from Arianna Rau to tie the game at two. 
  • Just two minutes later, Rochester responded with a. game winner from Kaylah Joyce off a beautiful feed from Kennedy Fraser. Rochester would hold on for the final four minutes of action to win the contest 3-2. 
 
By the Numbers
23-17 – Cornerstone outshot Rochester 23-17. 23 shots are a season high for the Golden Eagles. 
7 – Gracie Gortmaker scored her seventh goal of the season in the contest. 
9 – Rochester keeper Noemie Tartrou made a crucial nine saves in their win. 
 
 
What's Next?
Cornerstone closes the regular season on Saturday at Concordia for a 2:30 p.m. match. The game will prove crucial for CU's chances to make the WHAC Tournament.
