GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a WHAC opener that saw 44 total fouls, Cornerstone was able to cruise past Northwestern Ohio with a 95-71 home victory. CU now has scored 95 and 106 in their two home games this season and sit at 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in conference play.
Cory Ainsworth led the team with 24 points and
Kayden Bird added a career high 20 of his own in the win. The Golden Eagles will now travel to Madonna for a 7:30 p.m. tip for their final game before Thanksgiving.
Game Flow: Cornerstone – 95 UNOH - 71
First Half:
- Luke Rowlinson kicked off the Golden Eagle scoring in a fast-paced start with a three ball in the first 50 seconds.
- Cornerstone started the game on a 9-2 run with three consecutive buckets from Cory Ainsworth to follow the early three.
- UNOH would chip into the deficit with a three from Marquis Freeman at the 14;23 remaining mark, making the score 15-12.
- Mason Brooks immediately responded with a three of his own to help bring the CU lead back to six.
- Kayden Bird then got red hot, hitting three shots from behind the arc in under a minute forcing a UNOH timeout. CU led 30-17 with 10:33 to play.
- A 6-0 Racer run would cut the deficit back to single digits at seven with 7:51 to play.
- Neither side could get much of an advantage the remainder of the first half. Kayden Bird hit another deep ball right before the half, as CU led 50-41 at the half.
Second Half:
- Northwestern Ohio got off to a good start in the second half, cutting their deficit to five on a Ryan Archey layup, 52-47.
- With 16:36 to play, Trae Ruggles hit a three for the Racers to cut the deficit even further to 53-50.
- The rhythm started to slip from the game with multiple fouls being called the remainder of the contest. Despite the slow pace, Cornerstone was able to slowly go on an unorthodox 10-0 run to increase their advantage to 63-50. Luke Rowlinson hit a pair of layups in the run for the Golden Eagles.
- After UNOH hit just one free throw, Cornerstone continued to pour it on with yet another three from Kayden Bird to make it 66-51.
- Kayden Bird continued to hit clutch threes, hitting his sixth of the game with 9:22 to play. CU led 73-57.
- Fouls continued to be in issue in the second half. The two sides combined for 27 in the final 20 minutes alone and each side would see a player foul out. Cornerstone would go 11-18 from the stripe in the second half though as they were able to cruise to a 95-71 WHAC opening victory.
