Strong second quarter powers Women’s Basketball to home opener win vs. UNOH

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone would outscore Northwestern Ohio by 16 in the second quarter to cruise to a 87-70 home opening and WHAC opening victory on Saturday afternoon. CU never relinquished the lead after the second quarter and saw two 20+ scoring performances from Jaxi Long and Olivia Kubik. The Golden Eagles get back in the win column as they are now 2-2. 1-0 WHAC overall. They will face Madonna on the road on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m. for their final game before Thanksgiving break. 
 
Game Flow: Cornerstone – 87 UNOH - 70
First Quarter:
  • The offenses for both sides got off to a bit of a slow start in the Golden Eagles home opener, with just two points being scored in the first three and a half minutes. 
  • A Jaylee Long layup with 6:21 to play in the first quarter gave Cornerstone their first points of the game. 
  • Cornerstone would trail for much of the first half, but Emma Costen would hit a layup with 3:15 to go in the first quarter to tie the game up at nine. 
  • Both sides would get to the free throw line in the final three minutes of the first quarter to spark plug the offenses. The two sides sat tied at 16 after one quarter of play. 
Second Quarter:
  • CU found their rhythm behind the three-point line early in the second quarter, as Olivia Kubik hit a pair to put the Golden Eagles on top 26-22. 
  • Mackenzie Stien would add a layup to give Cornerstone their largest lead of the game so far at 28-22. 
  • The offense continued to shine in the second quarter with a 13-1 run to blow the Golden Eagle lead up to double figures. Olivia Kubik continued her hot stretch with a big three and a layup to make it 41-25 with 3:35 to play. 
  • Stephanie Ainsworth would hit a pair of free throws with just a few seconds left in the half to give Cornerstone the 45-29 lead at the break. 
Third Quarter: 
  • A great set piece to start the third quarter led to an open Maddison Fulks three. Cornerstone immediately scored to increase their lead to 19, 48-29.
  • The Racers started to get to the free throw line in the middle of the third quarter. UNOH was able to cut the deficit to 15, but Jaxi Long would hit a pair of her own free throws with 5:47 to go in the period to bring the CU lead back to 17 at 54-37. 
  • Jaxi Long started to find lanes to the bucket with a nice finger roll to continue her scoring and put Cornerstone back on top by their largest lead of 20. She later hit a three to again bring the lead to 20. 
  • UNOH started to make it a game again in the final two minutes of the third. They would go on a 10-0 run to make it 67-54 to begin the final 10 minutes. Alycia Patterson and Danae Williams each hit a shot from behind the arc in the run. 
Fourth Quarter:
  • The Racers would not stop, continuing their run with more three-point shooting. Alycia Patterson hit one right away to begin the fourth quarter and make it a 10-point game. UNOH then put on the full court press and started to force some Golden Eagle turnovers. 
  • With 7:58 to play, Cornerstone would hit their first bucket of the fourth quarter. Stephanie Ainsworth found one inside on the nice shovel pass from Jaxi Long to increase the advantage back to 10, 69-59. 
  • Stephanie Ainsworth continued her great play at the rim with another layup at the 6:55 mark that made it 72-59 in favor of the Golden Eagles. 
  • Jaxi Long would hit a three with 6:22 to play that would put the nail in the coffin to the attempted Racer comeback, as Cornerstone led 75-61. 
  • Northwestern Ohio was unable to cut the deficit to single digits in the final five minutes of play. Cornerstone would go on to secure an 87-70 home opening and WHAC opening victory.
By the numbers:
29-13 – Cornerstone outscored UNOH 29-13 in the second quarter to take command of the game after the two sides sat tied after the first quarter. 
24/20 – Jaxi Long led the team with 24 points falling one short of her career high, while Olivia Kubik tied her career high with 20. 
48-20 – Cornerstone dominated in the paint with 48 points to UNOH's 20.

Cornerstone continues WHAC play on the road on Tuesday against Madonna for their next contest.
