DEARBORN, Mich. – The Golden Eagles had their final regular season match of the year as they traveled to UM-Dearborn and lost 3-0 (25-21, 28-25, 27-25) to the surging Wolverine's team. It was a close match in all three sets, but Cornerstone fell short down the stretch as they had late leads in all three sets. Freshman
Gabby VerBerkmoes led the way for Cornerstone tying a career high 14 kills. Cornerstone has clinched a spot in the WHAC Tournament as they will wait to see who they play on Wednesday, November 8 to open tournament play.
Game Recap: Michigan-Dearborn – 3 Cornerstone - 0
First Set – Michigan-Dearborn – 25 Cornerstone – 21
- The Golden Eagles got off to a great start as they lead 7-0 to force the Wolverines to use a timeout thanks to multiple kills from Jada Thomas and Emmalee Murphy. Alli Pickard added a service ace in the run.
- A block from Eliza Thelen and Kylie Barron gives the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead.
- Cornerstone used a 3-0 run with two kills from Jada Thomas to extend their first set lead 15-9.
- A kill from Kylie Barron gave Cornerstone a 19-14 lead late in the first set.
- Michigan-Dearborn has stormed back going on a 6-0 run to take a 20-19 lead over the Golden Eagles. Four of those points coming off of errors from Cornerstone.
- The Wolverines finished the first set on a 5-1 run to come from behind to win 25-21 thanks to more errors from the Golden Eagles.
Second Set – Michigan-Dearborn – 28 Cornerstone – 26
- Like the first set, Cornerstone came out strong with a 5-1 start thanks to multiple kills from Kylie Barron.
- Cornerstone used a 3-0 run to extend their lead 10-6 off a kill from Gabby VerBerkmoes.
- Both teams have started to go back and forth with kills as Cornerstone continues to lead the Wolverines 14-13 after a kill from Eliza Thelen.
- Two kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes and a kill from Kylie Barron forced Michigan-Dearborn to use their final timeout as Cornerstone leads 20-17 late in the first set.
- Michigan-Dearborn used a 4-0 run to take a 21-20 lead over the Golden Eagles thanks to a good run of attacking from their hitters.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes ties the match 25-25 after a much-needed kill to extend the second set.
- Wolverines got the final two points they needed as they come from behind again to win set two 28-26.
Third Set – Michigan-Dearborn – 27 Cornerstone - 25
- Back-to-back kills from Gabby VerBerkmoes gave Cornerstone the early 3-2 lead in the third set.
- Michigan-Dearborn has taken a nice 8-5 lead over the Golden Eagles after strong attacking again from the Wolverine hitters.
- Cornerstone went on a 4-0 run thanks to three straight attacking errors from the Wolverines to take a 9-8 lead.
- The Golden Eagles went on another 4-0 run to force Michigan-Dearborn to use one of their timeouts thanks to Aubrey Lenz's three straight service aces.
- The Wolverines forced Cornerstone to use their first timeout after a 3-0 run tied the match 19-19 late in the third set.
- Cornerstone and Michigan-Dearborn have battled down the stretch as kills from Kylie Barron and Hannah Giere gave Cornerstone match point, 24-23 as the Wolverines call a timeout.
- Gabby VerBerkmoes kill gives Cornerstone a 25-24 lead as they are point away to force a fourth set.
- The Wolverines close out the third set on a 3-0 run to finish the sweep of the Golden Eagles, winning 27-25.
