GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Fresh off Christmas break, women's basketball came ready to play in an 80-73 victory over Bethel. The offense led the way for Cornerstone all game as they shot 50% from the field. The Golden Eagles also saw four players in double digits that saw
Olivia Kubik lead the way with a career high 29 points. This win moves Cornerstone to 6-5 on the season as they are now back in conference play with a matchup against Cleary on Wednesday, January 3.
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 80 Bethel - 73
- First Quarter
- Bethel opened the game on a nice 6-1 run that was led by their point guard Nyla Asad through the first three minutes of the first quarter.
- The Golden Eagles would respond with an 11-2 run of their own that was highlighted by a deep three from Olivia Kubik and layups from Mackenzie Stien to give Cornerstone a 12-8 lead.
- Gracie Gortmaker drives and makes a layup as Olivia Kubik follows that up with a three as the Golden Eagles lead 18-12 with 1:30 remaining in the first.
- Olivia Kubik drives and makes a layup with 13 seconds remaining to give Cornerstone a 20-15 lead after the first quarter. She leads the team with eight points.
- Second Quarter
- Stephanie Ainsworth and Mackenzie Stien got the scoring started in the second quarter with layups to make it a 24-18 Cornerstone lead.
- Cornerstone continues to push the ball on offense as Stephanie Ainsworth and Gracie Gortmaker got easy layups in transition to make it 30-22 with 4:32 remaining in the second.
- Emma Costen cleans up the offensive glass and makes the put pack as Olivia Kubik scores on a fastbreak layup to make it 35-22.
- Bethel closes the second quarter on a 9-2 run to make it a 37-31 Cornerstone lead headed into halftime. Gracie Gortmaker leads the Golden Eagles with 11 points.
- Third Quarter
- Bethel scored the first six points of the half to tie the game 37-37 before Stephanie Ainsworth stopped the scoring drought for the Golden Eagles with a layup as 6:26 remains.
- Stephanie Ainsworth continued to score for the Golden Eagles with back-to-back layups as Cornerstone now leads 46-42.
- Olivia Kubik scores six of the next seven points for the Golden Eagles to extend their lead to 10, 55-45 with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter.
- Cornerstone leads 60-50 after the end of the third quarter.
- Fourth Quarter
- Cornerstone opens the fourth quarter on a 5-2 run thanks to a three from Olivia Kubik and a layup from Mackenzie Stien.
- Mackenzie Stien completes the three-point play as Olivia Kubik follows up with another three of her own to make it a 71-56 Cornerstone lead.
- Bethel has started to slowly chip away at the Cornerstone lead as it is 77-66 with just over a minute remaining.
- Olivia Kubik ices the game away at the free throw as Cornerstone wins 80-73.
