Men’s Volleyball falls at (9) Lourdes to conclude a tough weekend

SYLVANIA, Ohio.  –After a tough match against (13) Indiana Tech, the Golden Eagles were seeking an away upset against (9) Lourdes University. Unfortunately for Cornerstone, their road trip to Indiana and Ohio ends with two losses. The Golden Eagles came close in the first and third set. The third set they took the Gray Wolves all the way to 27-29 to end the night. Golden Eagles will take their 8-2 record and look for an important WHAC win in the Mol Arena at Cornerstone University next Friday against Goshen College at 7 p.m.
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 0 Lourdes – 3 (21-25, 15-25, 27-29,)

Set 1
  • Cornerstone starts off the first set with a big block by Hubert Sliwinski and David Galanes, 1-0.
  • A pipe attack from David Galanes keeps the score close early in the first set. Lourdes leads 4-5.
  • A tool of the block for Brunno Peres brings Cornerstone closer to the Gray Wolves, 12-13 with Lourdes leading.
  • A kill by Vinicius Lopes of Lourdes builds their lead in the first set to 13-16, followed by a Cornerstone service error and a service ace from Tomas Olak. 14-18.
  • A strong swing from Lourdes inches them closer to finishing out the first set. The score, 17-22.
  • Another service error from the Golden eagles gives Lourdes an even greater lead, 17-23.
  • Cornerstone manages to stay in the first set on two attack errors from Lourdes, 21-23.
  • After a Lourdes timeout, they are able to close out the set smoothly with a kill and a service ace. 
  • The first set ends 21-25 Lourdes University.
Set 2
  • The second set starts with a kill from the right side of the Gray Wolves' offense, 0-1.
  • Cornerstone was able to tie the set early on, the score is 2-2.
  • A super block from the Gray Wolves puts them up 3-6.
  • A block by Andrew Galanes keeps the margins close, the score 4-6 Lourdes.
  • A setter dump from Patrick Voloch continues to keep the Golden Eagles close to the Gray Wolves, 7-9.
  • A long rally comes to a close for Lourdes in their favor, coming out on top to build their lead to 7-12.
  • The Gray Wolves give a point to Cornerstone on an attack error, 9-12 is the score in the second set.
  • Brunno Peres with an important kill off the block helps Cornerstone to close the gap to 10-13.
  • Multiple runs of 3-0 for Lourdes makes the gap insurmountable for the Golden Eagles. The Gray Wolves close out the set with a kill by Vinicius Lopes, 15-25.
Set 3
  • The third set starts off with a kill from Vinicius Lopes 1-0.
  • Brunno Peres and Andrew Galanes have some kills of their own, the third set score is 3-4.
  • Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Gray Wolves go on a 6-0 run in the third set to bring the score to 3-10.
  • More kills from David Galanes and Brunno Peres, both assisted by Patrick Voloch help Cornerstone bring the set within five points of Lourdes, 11-16.
  • A mix of service errors, attack errors, and even a ball handling error of the Gray Wolves gives the Golden Eagles a glimpse of hope in the third set. Lourdes still lead 15-18.
  • Cornerstone comes ahead late in the third set on a kill by David Galanes 23-22.
  • Cornerstone and Lourdes trade points and timeouts back and forth, two kills from David Galanes and a kill by Lourdes' Eduardo Ayala keep the set tied 27-27.
  • The third and final set comes to an end on a Cornerstone attack error. The Gray Wolves win the set 29-27.
 
By the Numbers 
30 – Outside hitter, David Galanes, led Cornerstone in total attacking attempts, totaling 30 in which 12 of those resulted in kills for Cornerstone.
3 – Lourdes' George Tsogtbaatar led both sides in service aces, with a total of 3.
17 – Eduardo Ayala of the Gray Wolves led both teams in total attack attempts and kills, have a total of 39 attempts and 17 recorded kills.
12 – Kyi Jagorin once again records the most digs of either side in this contest with 12.
27 – Patrick Voloch takes 27 assists back to Michigan with him after this contest. The most assists of any other player on the court tonight.
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone looks forward to a home match with support of home fans against WHAC opponent Goshen College, on Friday at 7 p.m.
