ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Men's basketball traveled to four-seed Rochester to kick off the WHAC Tournament. Cornerstone struggled from behind the arc, making just two for the game as they fell to Rochester 76-66. It was a tough battle between the two teams as the defense for both teams ran the show for most of the game.
Eli Steffen ran the offense for Cornerstone as he led them with 18 points and dishing off passes all around but wasn't enough to get past the Warriors. Game Highlights
- First Half
- Trent Summerfield got the scoring started for the Golden Eagles nailing a corner three as Luke Rowlinson would follow with a pull-up jumper next possession to give Cornerstone the early 5-4 lead.
- Cornerstone used a three-minute 7-0 run to extend their lead 14-6 over the Warriors as Carter Nyp has scored five-straight for the Golden Eagles.
- After Rochester called a timeout, something clicked for the Warriors as Cornerstone has found troubles scoring as Rochester has evened up the game going on a 13-3 run to make it 19-19 with nine-minutes remaining in the first half.
- Rochester has used a 7-2 run to extend their lead 28-23 with 5:45 in the half.
- Eli Steffen has been knocking down his free-throws to make it a 30-28 Rochester lead with a little over three-minutes remaining.
- Cornerstone used the final minute to use a 4-0 run to close the half down 34-33 after a layup by Luke Rowlinson and Cory Ainsworth. It has been a defensive battle for both teams as their physicality have played a factor as both teams worked hard for their points.
- Second Half
- It has been a slow start to the second half for both teams as they have not found any easy baskets to gain momentum. Eli Steffen finished a three-point play to give Cornerstone the 40-39 with 14:19 remaining in the game.
- Rochester used the next four-minutes to go on a 9-2 run to take the lead 48-42 as the Golden Eagles have struggled to finish around the rim.
- The Warriors have continued to keep their lead as they have shut down any run Cornerstone tried to make. 53-48 Rochester lead with 8:12 remaining in the game.
- Cornerstone can't buy a basket as they have had every chance to tie or take the lead, but Rochester lead is 57-50 with 6:26 remaining.
- Eli Steffen continued to do what he does best as he scores another basket around the rim and dishing a pass to Cory Ainsworth to make it 59-55. Gunnar Walters nails back-to-back dagger threes to extend Rochester's lead back to 10, 65-55 with 3:42 remaining.
- The defense of the Warriors continued to disrupt any flow Cornerstone tried to find on the offensive side of the ball.
- Cornerstone would not be able to come back from the deficit as they did not make a single three in the second half. Rochester finished the game knocking down free-throws to win 76-66 over the Golden Eagles.
